Winter life in the suburbs

We used to live in Missouri. We were there for the 500 year flood, fortunately our house was on high ground. We also had some bitterly cold winter days, but as I recall, it would be back up to sixty degrees within a couple of days.

And Spring came in FEBRUARY! Here in Michigan, February is the dead of winter. You learn to take the good with the bad.

Yeah, amazing distribution from the storm. Lander, 30 miles north, got nothing!

That's a shame about Ellicott City. It was a sweet little town in the early 70s. Guess that's what happens to sweet little towns -- look at Jackson Hole. Disgraceful.
Kinda like that here Two Bit..10 miles away they only got 10 inches. Get over the border into Mt..they only got 3 inches. I am only 10 miles from Montana with a high valley pass next to the Pryor Mountains. left here the other day to go to Billings to see the doctari..snow/ice covered roads from a previous storm and 20 degrees. Got to Bridger Mt(35 mi) and it was 2 below..Snowing lightly in Billings all day and zero. We did all of momma's shopping done and came home. From Bridger south the roads were clear and the temps were below zero here at home...again. Started snowing and we ended up with another 2 ft. As far as Jackson Hole..first time I was there it was a nice but sleepy little town(late 60's) when I came back from S E Asia the first time. Last time I was there we went out to see my sister about 3 years ago. She was living over in Pinedale. That town had turned all yuppie...and nothing like most places here in Wy. Whole buncha Kalipornia people . Course Cody is gettin the same way.. That idiot Simpson and the mayor of Cody finally got barely enough votes to raise the sales tax in Park county from 4% to 5%...with the idea that the touristas will be paying that extra tax...duh!

Well here in N.W. Indiana aint got no snow ,but we have had ICE on the ground since Monday and every night we get another fresh covering of drizzle and freeze . It's so bad my prancing Collie is waiting each time he go's out to have his paw anti slip chains put on so he can make it back to the house.,He sure looks strange walking stiff legged to keep from slipping.

Had to google this, thought you were making a joke.
Guess I need to get out more. :)

I was living one county over (Anne Arundel) in the '60s-'70s. Used to hit the antique shops in Ellicott City. Walked through the train tunnel a couple of times. I even worked at O'Donnell Pontiac for a little while.

Not much in the northeast yet. We know it's coming maybe all at once?
The plow is ready, the genny is ready, plenty of fuel, firewood and food.
I'm not sure who to believe one says a mild winter little snow the other one predicts snow but colder. It's been hit and miss it goes north or south of me. It's a exact image of the blizzard of '78 s far. That one hit in February.

I just purchased three battery tenders for the equipment. I'm tired of losing batteries during the winter. I'm working on a trickle charger that will do a bank of batteries. On a timer with diodes.

I hear ya'. I grew up in Fremont County so we were in Jackson a couple times a year when I was a kid. I loved the place: the true West. I drove by Teton Village last year for the first time since January '70. You'd think they'd held the Olympics there; nothing but condos as tall and as far as you could see. Absolutely destroyed what was. I'll hang on to my memories from the 50s and 60s and try to get short-term amnesia.

Yeah, I love Cody, but....

Greed is what drives those "tax the tourists" types, like that ninny from Jackson several years ago who proposed a 10% statewide lodging tax. About 40% of the hotel, motel, and B&B trade in Fremont County comes from Wyomingites. Wyomingites ain't tourists anywhere in Wyoming ('cept maybe in Jackson, and not many of us go there! I was only there for a doc's appointment) so we're gouging our own. I could write a book.

As irritating as it can be at times, I like Missouri, where we get all four seasons, sometimes in the same weekend . . .

Are you sure not the same day???
You are where the warm wet air meets cold dryer and then the game begins throughout the year!!! But a beautiful area in the rural!

Trying to book a trip to a nice horse ranch this summer in Wyoming. I just found out how much more expensive It would be than my ranch trip to Arizona was. The extra taxes were also a wake up call. Really would like to see Wyoming and Yellowstone once in my lifetime but not sure i can swing it.
We might try Montana to see if its more affordable.

We've got a balmy 6 degrees going for us tonight. Not too much snow on the ground right now. Only about a foot. We had a storm that dumped 27 inches on us a little over a week ago with temperatures hitting minus 24, but things warmed up and snow began melting. Big storm expected this coming week. We'll see. Just glad my woodshed is full. Several cords of cherry, ash, and a little bit of pine for starting things off.

I hear ya'. It's the old Economics 101 rule of supply and demand in full force. I have friends who have run a family horse packing company for more than 40 years -- they run week-long trips into the Wind River Mountains all summer. Ain't cheap, but they're fully booked already, and I'm sure they'll continue to get more calls. To accommodate more folks they'd have to add horses and hands, and they feel they would lose that family touch if they did.

As for "The Park," go in May or September (if you can) -- might encounter some weather and it's still expensive but not nearly as crowded. You can find some neat places to stay away from the "popular" towns. (One meal a day out of a cooler -- cold cuts, bread, fresh fruit and veggies, and drinks -- is a relaxing and inexpensive way to enjoy the scenery from a roadside pull off.)

September for the park for sure. MUCH less people. And the weather is usually pretty nice. But you could hit some snow. But that time of the year it'll usually be gone pretty soon. When I go to the park it is almost always in Mid September...and I live 75 miles away. As far as cheaper in Montana.. I doubt it. In the park(or even close) keep the food sealed in a cooler and in a trunk if possible.
