My wife got up this morning and headed to the kitchen to feed the cats. We just got them some new food and they really like it.
The cat bowl's on a mat on our kitchen floor next to the 'fridge.
My wife said the mat was wet and as she looked further she found that it wasn't just in that one spot. Didn't smell like cat tinkle, must have been water. But from where?
The water had been coming out of the ice maker in our 'fridge.
We didn't have time to do anything about it at the time, my wife had a dental appointment and we also planned on getting a workout at the YMCA, so we shut off the water to the house and mopped up the mess.
Our ice maker had been acting up, so we had ordered one with the intention of installing a new one. The old one kinda limped along so we put off changing it.
When we got home I put the new ice maker in. It needed to be replaced anyway.
That didn't fix it. So I looked further and removed the water valve. I figure it's the only other thing it could be. Problem is there's no way to take it apart to try to fix it.
I've got one on order. It costs 'bout $40.
Supposed to get here by May 5th. 'Til then I've got the line pinched off with a pair of channel locks and a screw in the end.
We're gonna go on a road trip this weekend to attend a wedding. We're gonna shut the water off again.
I'm looking forward to getting that ice maker working again.

Mine started leaking two weeks ago in the basement. It's a good thing the wife went down there when she did because we were going away for the day. Since our basement is finished off we would have had one helluva mess!
The ice maker was giving me trouble for sometime and on two different service calls spent $400. to fix it. At this point I don't know if the repairman pinched the water line in the back and it finally wore through.
So for now until I feel like it we're buying our ice and drinking spring water!;)

In a house I once owned I was walking out the door for a work trip and heard a 'sssssssssssss.' We know the sounds of our homes wherever we live. :) This sound caught my attention and soon found the source...water line to the icemaker with a pin hole. No, not the line from the 'fridge manifold to the ice maker...the entire line was plastic tubing.

Shut the line off and got home days later. ZERO indication of the routing. Cannot account for the number of holes in the basement in the search of the connection thereto.

Mad? Yep? House not flooded? COOL!

Be safe.

I had a severe problem that was icemaker related but the line to it developed a leak not the icemaker itself. our refig. sets in the kitchen next to my man cave so of course it leaked into there. I got the water shut off and immediately started moving my collection out of harms way. it took commercial driers days to get the place dried out before we could even begin repairs plus dealing with the insurance company which was another matter entirely. We had such a mess that all the carpeting and a lot of the tile had to be ripped out and replaced. The house was a mess for almost a month. My wife took off to visit the grandkids in CA so I was stuck with this. I can assure you my scotch consumption went up accordingly. I feel your pain!

$400? Dang, I'm in the wrong business. Since I'm doin' the fixin', I'm thinking I deserve at least a box of cigars for it.

...my wife and her sister inherited their mother's house down the hill from us...

...my wife shoved something under the kitchen sink one night and the old copper tubing busted clean off...

...by the yelling ...I figured out what happened and didn't even go look...

...straight to the basement and the shut off valve...

First trip he tested it and it was a circuit board....$200. Plus change.
The ice maker worked like a champ for about one week and quit again.
This time it was the infrared eye that watched the ice level, another $200.
After this repair the thing was working flawlessly until the water leak.
When the service guy was here last he pulled it away from the wall to clean out the backside, now did he pinch the line while pushing it back:rolleyes: don't know until I can pull it out again and check it. Need my sons help to do this.;).

My fridge in Japan — bought the place in 2012 and renovated it — makes ice cubes, but, the water reservoir is removd by hand, filled up in the sink, and replaced. Nothing to leak.

Couldn't find that in the US, and it was hard finding a fridge w/o an icemaker, but ultimately found one w/o one.

Me, I don't like 'em. They leak. (Hence the thread, of course.) Don't use that much ice anyway.

Last summer I wanted to clean out the cooling lines under the fridge so I pulled it away from the wall.
I removed the cardboard backing and vacuumed it the best I could but wasn't happy with it so I reversed The hose on my shop vac. Well that did the trick but made a heck of a mess in the kitchen with the dust going everywhere.
Next thing I did was push the fridge back into place . Then I hear sssssss well I broke the 1/4" copper line for the ice maker. I ran to the basement for the shut off after that I had one heck of a mess to clean up as the water mixed with the dust to make mud.
I FINNALY got it fixed and the mess clean my wife got home and asked what did you do today.:o

In-laws LG French Door fridge had two intermittent leaks, one of them was slow and existed probably since it was new.

The plastic line on the back, from the valve, split and leaked fast when the water valve opened for ice or door water. In-laws couldn't see the signs of water weeping through the tile grout on their Florida slab home.
Hubby replaced the split water line and tested it. Then sees a slow leak from the elbow of the 2nd plastic tube. The tube is not routed straight into the elbow by the factory and the o-ring in the quick-connect elbow could not seal the line. We found a better quality elbow with double o-ring seals that took care of the second leak.

Good luck.

Ice makers are the weak spot on refrigerators.

I've never had one that didn't eventually cause trouble.

My solution has been simple: disconnect the thing and use old fashioned ice trays (available everywhere for a buck or two).

I don't miss the ice maker.

I haven't had ice maker troubles, but it's exciting when the water heater lets go. Fortunately I was home to shut off the water when it happened!

It dumped the entire contents on the floor, so of course it tried to refill itself, unsuccessfully. I guess on the plus side it was the apartment manager's problem to fix.

Snubby,
I just had mine replaced in my 8 year old unit but thankfully under warranty. Apparently the Ice Maker in mine did not have the proper defrost cycle, ice froze together as a giant clump, got stuck and caused the ice maker door to stick opened. The warm air from the outside got into the stuck opening and in turn defrosted the ice into my Kitchen.

Thankfully we have a 10 year extended warranty because this fancy dan Fridge would have cost me $1,400.00 to fix! They replaced the Ice Maker itself, the Control Module that tells it what to do, the Master Computer Circuit Board with new defrost programs, the rear Insulator Panel in the back of the Fridge, and a few hook up cables. WOW!! They also replaced a draw glass top lid but that had nothing to do with the ice maker issue. I normally do not but the extended warranty's, but this fridge has so many gizmo's and gadgets a bell went off in my head and told me this was the time to do so. I certainly got my $275.00 back for the 10 year ext. warranty!

In our old house I could never get the ice maker hooked up so it wouldn't leak. In our current house it would take a major effort to get water to the ice maker, so, once again, no ice. With summer coming on I have been thinking about one of the counter-top makers. Anybody have any experience with them??
