I have a custom smith 686 with wolf reduced hammer spring. I had this spring for about three years now. Today i was getting light strikes on one / two rounds on each cyclinder. I always use federal primers. Never had this problem.
Do you think that hammer spring is actually worn out ? even after just three years ??

Pull the grips off and blow the lock work out with carburetor
cleaner. I "think" you have fouling that retards the hammer strike.

That for me would be the easiest diagnostic regimen to initally
take.

Could be something as simple as the strain screw backing off a tad. Check for full tightness with a properly fitting screwdriver.

I can't imagine......

...a hammer spring wearing out after 3 years, unless it was defective. I think I'd do a good cleaning and lube to make sure something isn't slowing the hammer down. I kinda doubt that would be it, but it's something I'd have to check before pronouncing the spring as goners.

I had a similar issue a few years ago. I took an empty primer cup and put it over the end of the strain screw then retightened it. Seemed to cure the issue.

i always keep it clean, i took the side plate off a few months back and there was no **** in there .
the hammer spring is a wolf reduced power spring one

A properly tempered spring will hold whatever shape you bend it to. In this case, whatever shape you straighten it to. Essentially, you will be putting a bit more preload on the spring when you tighten the strain screw. The same works with original S&W mainsprings, for those who don't have a primer cup.

If the spring isn't working now, nothing to lose. Can't hurt, might help.

was yours a stock hammer spring ? i am beginning to think its my strain screw probably too short - its the factory one . Might be worth me trying a longer screw

I don't think it was a stock spring. I believe it was a Wolff spring but it was the standard not the reduced power. I have those in all my revolvers. I tried the reduced power but it was way too light.
