Any experience with using the Wolf Standard small rifle primers in 223. Can not find the 223 mag for 223 but can find the standard small rifle Wolf. They say the difference is the hardness of the primer cup.

It's all I use for 223.

They are copper colored and easy to distinguish from their small pistol primers. Not sure about their small rifle magnum primers, never used them.

I'm guessing the difference is like with CCI selling a version they call their "arsenal" primer that has a slightly thicker cup material. It's insurance the floating firing pin in some weapons won't accidentally light off a round. I ordered the standard primers and don't feel there will be an issue in using them in my AR15 loads, but would have gotten the "magnum" version had they been in stock still when I made the order.

The guys over on ARFCOM claim the Wolf Standard small rifle are too soft and lead to doubles. They recommend the SR magnums.

Have you ever experienced slam fires with the Wolf primers in a gas gun? So far I have only used the CCI No. 41 and have had no issues. My only experience with slam fires have been with my Garand. Twice with Winchester and once with a Greek HPX round. I found afterward that the primer pocket had a ridge in it that prevented that primer from seating. I have some regular CCI large rifle that I may try in the Garand but I am up in the air about the M&P15.

Frank,
I am a relative newcomer to rifle hand-loading. I am only on my third thousand 223 loadings as a matter of fact. Most of mine have been pistol caliber carbines and those are lever action. I have loaded some 30/06 and some 308 but for bolt actions.

To stop rambling though, no, I haven't experienced any slam fires with my AR.

I have used some Remington primers in 223 as well and had no ill affects with them either.

I haven't shot the "snot" out of the AR either. I guess I am just hoarding at this point!

I just ordered 5k of the Wolf SRM primers for .223/5.56mm handloading. I haven't loaded for the .223 before, but I have read about possible issues with standard SR primers from various manufactures and slam-fires. Given that the place I ordered the primers from had both SR and SRM in stock for the same price, I ordered the SRM. I didn't see any reason to take the chance.

I have noticed the light pin mark on primers of rounds I have chambered and then ejected without shooting, so its obviously at least possible to have a slam fire. I expect to stick with Wolf SRM or other "military" SR primers for handloading the .223.

Thanks very much for the feedback. I agree that a slam fire is possible because of the free floating firing pin in both the ARclone and the Garand. I would hazard a guess and say the Garand is more likely than the ARclone simply because of the mass of the firing pin. I have some new Winchester brass that came primed. I think I am gonna run off a handful and see how stable they are. I will report further here, provided the rain stops and I can get to the range.

Thanks again,

Tell me about it, if it doesn't stop raining soon I am going to have to start working on that ark...

I am searching for Gopherwood trees so we can stick to tradition.

Just to clear up this "flood" thing. As quoted from the Bible according to Skip:
"It ain't gonna happen like that ever again!"
Boyer 1:1

It is going to be destroyed again, but next time by fire (according to the real Word!

Thanks for the clarification. I have given up my search for Gopherwood. Priority now is burn cream and asbestos blankets.

Well, if it doesn't stop raining I don't think you are going to have to worry too much about fire!

Not to get to poignant but, being wet would just make it much more of a miracle! Kind of like what happened for Elijah and the prophets of Bail. Things were pretty wet that day too!
