Won bid for S&W box on eBay-Problems!

I buy online. I buy in bricks and mortar stores. In stores everyone gets charged sales tax. Online sellers have only recently had to start dealing with sales tax. I don't like it, but right is right. There is no reason online stores should get a discount simply because sales tax is not paid. Either charge the tax based on the location of the seller or charge the tax based on the location of the buyer. One or the other. I'd prefer the location of the buyer since Ga. tax paid goes to Ga. But either way, it needs to be the same for sellers regardless of whether they do business on Ebay or if they run a physical location. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

I understand the Amazon and Wayfair sales tax, etc., new items bought from a retailer, but I don't get the EBay ding. I know Illinois made a big deal about targeting EBay this year.
So basically if I decide to get rid of some used items on EBay that I have laying around in my closet that I paid sales tax on years ago, another "sales tax" is charged again? How long till the taxman shows up at garage sales or Craigslist sellers? Or this forum? You bought a revolver on the S&W forum, you owe us $65.

Nothing new here...

Ebay is collecting legally mandated sales tax and forwarding it to the appropriate States. This is a big plus for their sellers, as tracking, collecting and submitting the tax would be a logistical nightmare for small timers. Sellers have no control over the tax collection and ebay had no choice but to comply with the law.

Michigan has a 6% sales tax on everything but groceries and yes, I report and pay about $100 per year "use tax" on my State Income Tax Form for taxable goods purchased that weren't taxed. I don't like it, but I make every effort to comply with the law.

In my profession, taxation and public accounting, there's an old rule "Ignorance of the law is not a defense."

I just reviewed my second hyperlink in my post above and discovered that there are four states (Idaho, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Washington) in which the sales threshold is $10,000.00. Granted the new rules apply to the e-Bay, Amazon's, etc. But I have found no exception for small mom-and-pop operations or individual sellers, i.e. Internet forums like this one.

As s&wchad pointed out, the administrative and logistical challenges in fulfilling this requirement could be enormous. I refuse to provide sales tax accounting and reporting services for this very reason.

That 10.5% for PA sales tax....... not 100% legit. PA sales tax is 6%.
It was only a matter of time. Where there are dollars flowing, there are, or will be, taxes.

I believe the sales tax goes by the state it is received in. I wonder if the OPs area is 10%

I am surprised they are not taxing baskets you win at raffles and such yet.

On a recent eBay purchase I was charged 10.5% sales tax. The sales tax in NC is only 6.75%. What is eBay doing with all of the extra money they are collecting?

I like the idea of a tax on non-essentials. The more you spend on fun stuff the more you get taxed. It lets a person choose if they want to save their money for later or get taxed for spending it now.

this will explain the issues.....
