WONDERING WHY NO NEW 22 MANUFACTURERS HAVE SURFACED

Supply was keeping up with demand until a year ago. I doubt ammo companies are expecting this to be the new norm. Let's put it like this. Say you get a new job where your mediocre income is supplemented by bonuses from sales revenue. Your first couple years are average and then all of a sudden your sales increase and you're earning a substantial amount more. Based off the two prior years and your sudden success, will you go out and buy a new house, luxury car and young wife to boot? I think not. You'll ride the wave with caution due your experience with years past.

I see that Norma is selling 22 ammunition now. Don't know if they make it themselves or outsource it to some other manufacturer but their quality has always been good and the price is not too bad.

Mass Hysteria/Hoarding

Would you stake the financial future of your family on a business when you knew that the political party in power wants to ban your product and has come close again and again to doing so?...

...If we could get the government in check and cut them back to living within the powers granted to them by the constitution a lot of things that are impossible now would become simple.

Let us not forget those who drive and operate the FEAR FACTORY. They want to minimize/defund public education, all the while trying to increase and "steer" public fear in a particular direction. THAT is why there is so much hoarding going on, plain and simple.

If some of you had been reading the American Rifleman (and if you aren't NRA members SHAME ON YOU!) you'd have noticed that the limiting factor on ammo production is cartridge casings. Probably material to make them shortages, leading to the casing shortage.

Now then, if we just look at the build a green fields ammo plant issue:

1. Money. Lots of money, plus a line of credit.

2. Construction permits including evironmental impact statements take time-assuming you already own land with appropriate zoning. If not, add time to locate, verify zoning and acquire the land. Somewhere in here is getting the BATFE license to manufacture ammunition along with liability insurance coverage.

2A. Supply sources-where are you going to get your lead, brass, priming compounds etc. Are they going to have sufficient capacity to keep you supplied at a price where you're going to be competitive?

3. Design facility. You should have been talking to machinery manufacturers to learn structural requirements of the building and suggestions on layout.

3A. With permits, licenses and building plans in hand, start construction.

4. Machinery- would have to be built. Don't know the lead time (years), but at least part of it could be done during phase 2/3. Then there's the setup time.

4. Workers. You have to have workers trained to operate the equipment, plus on site tool & die workers. These don't grow on trees.

I've got some background in manufacturing. I'd expect the quickest you could get off the ground is 3 years, 5 more likely. Are the market conditions going to allow you to make profit?

The various current manufacturers are adding personnel and ordering machinery to install in current facilities or perhaps modest expansions. They aren't going to over extend themselves to meet a demand that may not continue.

Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if those people had stock in firearms and ammunition companies. Cause a panic and watch their investment soar as manufacturers have trouble keeping anything on the shelves.

But fear mongers exist on both sides of the fence too spreading sketchy doomsday rumors, like DHS buying all the ammo.

Who runs the "fear factory"? Do all the manufacturers operate under its power?

I smell another "Kook alert".

Some excellent comments.....assume the political climate factor has been mentioned too.

I see NORMA now has a US Distributor setup and just missed a full "big" shelf full of .22 NORMA last week at one local shop.

They took a picture (they shared) since its the most they have rcvd.in one shipment in a long time...
