Wood Grips for a New Model 19

The Model 19-9 "Classic" I recently bought new, has the round butt frame but the round-to-square butt conversion grips that look similar to the old square butt Target design. They are fine for SA shooting and soaking up Magnum recoil, but for DA and especially rapid DA, they are too large for my medium-large hand.

Did S&W ever make a round-to-square butt conversion grip in the Magna style? For me, they work well though the recoil is more noticeable.

Or, the wood grips in the picture that are not mounted on the gun would be perfect if they came in a round-to-square butt conversion.

Lots of people make nice wood grips for this gun, but I prefer real S&W appearance if possible. I might settle for something that looks factory and have the S&W medallions installed to ease my eyes.

BTW, the Goodyears by Uncle Mike's on the 66 in the picture feel best of all, skinny near the top for trigger reach but getting thicker in the middle/bottom for recoil. But they are hideously ugly, I don't believe they were ever made in wood.

I have never seen a Magna conversion grip, but then I have never looked for one. It is probably available from one of the larger aftermarket grip makers. I would look at Altomonte's website

Have you considered the Factory RB Combats?

I think that you will find them more filling at the bottom of the hand than the Banana grips you have pictured

I believe I know where you got those beautiful Macassar ebony grips, I have a model 60 pro series wearing some.

While Goodyears seem to hurt almost everyones' eyes you sort of nailed it. They DO work and work well. What do you want to do, look at your gun or shoot it?

The Uncle Mike's were designed by Craig Spegal. He makes them in wood. He does amazing work. Not cheap and currently a 2 year wait according to his web site.

Last I heard Herrett's was closing out all of their inventory and going out
of business. Don't know if they are still there, but it might be worth a
phone call.
As mentioned above, Craig Spegel grips can't be beat. 2 years is a long
time to wait but 2 years will come whether you order or not.

Herrett's Shooting stars rock for small hands, I expect the Jordan Trooper's would be better for large hands. As stated Herretts is going out of business, ebay is where I would look for Herretts.

Herrett's made great gun stocks, sorry to see them closing.
Herrett's Shooting Star stocks are great for medium size hands.
Herrett's Jordan Trooper stocks are great if you have large hands.

What do you want to do, look at your gun or shoot it?

Unfortunately, Both.
If I only want efficiency, I use a Glock.
Ugly but efficient.

If I only want beauty, I use a color-case frame SAA with walnut stocks.
Beautiful but not very efficient.

For me, the S&W revolvers are in between. I want them to look good, and shoot well. That usually involves compromises.
Definitely a first-world problem...

I just fiddled with a set of square butt factory Magna grips for a round butt N frame - Model 24 3" barrel, was looking for that "3" Model 27" look.

I used Brownells Acraglass to fill the valleys front and back on the grip. You'll have to do the same for the base and that's a bit of a challenge.

Tape off the grip frame and tape off one of the grips. Goal is to have the acraglass to adhere to one half of the wood grip. Make the acraglass proud, make sure you don't leave any air pockets. Let the acraglass set a bit before working with it, will help keep it from running. Best to do the front first, let it set a bit. Then the rear.

There are other ways of doing it - malleable putty is easier to work with, but I like the acraglass or epoxy because it adheres to a grip panel and fills better.

I then use a BK grip adapter up front. Works very well. How well it looks depends on attention to detail & skill level.
