Recently I looked at a model 57 no dash which was rumored to be in the presentation case, like new, with all accessories. Of course, when I saw the box, it looked alright on the outside except for the latches, they were spring loaded and had to be pushed, both inside I believe? The latches had circular tabs that needed to be pushed inwards to open this case, much like a cheap briefcase. Internally the box was just 2 pieces of gray foam, no cuts in it or anything. So fast forward to today, I call my FFL to tell him I don't want the 57 no dash since it was trapped for a scope which was done post production. He then tells me a S&W collector told him that the box was correct, except the interal linings and what not was all removed. I myself still think the box was wrong. I am familiar with the wood presentation cases which have a buckle which either snaps up to the lid or perhaps it snaps down to the bottom. But either way, a snap latch.

Were there ever presentation cases with a spring loaded latch?

I was also wondering were they different hinge types, such as a double hinge vs 1 long hinge which ran almost the entire length of the box?

S&W's mahogany presentation cases had one latch in the front on the cases made for guns with a 4,5,6, or 6 1/2-inch barrel. The case made for the 8 3/8-inch length used two latches in the front. All of the cases had two latches in the back. They were not spring loaded and most of the front latches were made by a company in New Jersey, with a few being made in England.

Check Bill Cross's expert commentary,he has info and photos of the 44 mag cases from 1956 to 1985, but the 41 mag cases would follow the same progression. The case you describe sounds like a generic S&W wood case that the factory would have sold as an accessory at one time.(PS. Bill Cross beat me by 8 minutes.)Also, I never remember a full piano type hinge.

Concerning the Model 57, S&W probably used two styles of latch on the front of their cases from 1964 to around 1969 when the latch made in England was discontinued and the latch made in New Jersey was used until the case was discontinued in 1985.

The next case!

As Doc 44 stated the cases used until 1985 were of the type he described!

After 1985 S&W used a case with spring latches, 2 on the 8 3/8" cases, and two hinges. However the hinges did not allow the top to be opended past 90degs. Also there was a S&W logo burned into the lower right corner of the top. These cases were made of Mahogany however it is not as figured as the earlier cases!

The interior of these cases was a piece of light blue colored foam rubber in the top and the bottom.

I have found these cases without the logo on the top and the liners were the type with the small too compartment. I have not been able to determine when the use of this type of case was discontinued. Also I don't believe S&W shipped any guns in these cases, they were bought as an after market item from S&W.
