A local, hip restaurant and bar is running a promotion where they show every World Cup match with big drink discounts during the play. I understand that due to time differences some of the games will be a 4:00 a.m. our time. But that does not seem to have dampened the spirits of those promoting the event.
They have also lined their substantial outdoor deck with the flags of every nation playing in the World Cup. It is quite a colorful and attractive display. Frankly that is the only reason I found out about the promotion. My pharmacy is across the street, and I wondered what the heck are all these flags doing out here? Then I shifted into, “who in the heck’s flag is that!?”
I find it a brave and cutting edge promotion here in the middle of SEC Football country. But I hope they do well. Although I am not a soccer fan, I do respect the athletes and their effort. And perhaps the times are changing and soccer is gaining tremendously in popularity here in flyover country.
I doubt it would kill me to slip in with the young folks and hipsters and watch a game and drink a beer. I can scream TOUCHDOWN every time they kick it in the nets for laughs.

Please - I have already had to endure incessant news coverage for a couple weeks already and now I find that it will be all over TV until December 18. This is the most ridiculous coverage I have ever seen for a sport that gets practically no press for 11 months a year.

No overtimes until it goes into the knockout stages. I thought the ref was a little quick on the yellow cards given to the US, especially the first two. The US ended up with 4 players with yellow cards and Wales was only given one.

That confused me, too, but I think — I guess — that in tournament play, with different groups initially competing within their groups, points are awarded for ties. Whoever winds up with the most points within the group advances. (Is my guess.)What about overtime????
Or something like that. For the US, it was the first time in eight years to be at the World Cup. For Wales, 60 something years. Not top teams, but both played with a lot of passion. I enjoyed the game.

I never watch soccer unless the US men or women are going for Olympic GOLD or a World Cup final.
All I know is someone is trying to put a ball in the oppositions net. But if America is playing I’m rooting for them.

In the first rounds, group play, each time plays the other once. There are 4 teams in each group. The team receives 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and no points for a loss. The top two points leaders in each group advance to the next round, the knockout round. You lose in the knockout round and you're out. That's when overtime comes into play because there has to be a winner to advance to the next round.

My two oldest sons were on their High School Varsity Soccer team in 1998 and in 1999. They came in second in the state in 98 and won the state in 99. That was their school's 17th state championship in 25 years. Only the small town newspaper has a small write up about their string of championships. Now everyone is screaming the joys of soccer! Sort of! "There Can be only ONE!" And there will only be one true All American Pastime! This is and will remain Beer Consumption during sporting events!

The World Cup is truly just that an event that takes place every four years with teams from around the world. Not many other sports an say that, kind of line the fake “World Series” that was just finished this month. Not really a World Series when only teams from the MLB play. Time to change the name.
And let’s talk about football, a game that the feet are used less than 1% of the time. Kind of a silly name for a game played with your hands.

I got my fill of soccer back when my son was a young kid. Two seasons per year. I didn’t like it much then either. Regardless, I had to attend and cheer his team on.

I have been a fan since I was a lad. I still enjoy watching the WC, the Premier League and MLS. Long ago I came to grips with the historic contribution that my kinsmen have made to the game.

Wonderful movie as the the book by Joseph Kessel. It may be the only movie filmed in Afghanistan. I was impressed as a youth.
