Worst Recoiling Handgun You Own

My Mossberg 590 Shockwave.

Fortunately, I've become something of a recoil junky, so the powerful backward jolt it delivers is nothing short of exhilarating to me, and believe it or not, it isn't painful at all because the grip angle doesn't send the recoil energy straight into your wrist like ordinary vertical pistol grips do.

EDIT: Whoopsiedaisy... This is about handguns. In that case, I guess the answer would be my Taurus Judge Magnum, but then again, in many ways it's actually more pleasant to shoot than my Ruger LCP.

I know how it hurts when the gun bangs your trigger finger. Mine is a Ruger LCR .327 Federal magnum.

Most Uncomfortable - .380 AMT Backup ( SA)

Most recoil in absolute sense - Either .45-70 Contender, or John Ross revolver .
So bad I dumped mine for a loss. Worst pistol I've had the misfortune to own. AMT made some real dogs!

I love big bullets! I have a S&W 629 2.5" 44 Mag, It is pretty stout and draws blood with every full power shot! Like "gonerydin" said I love it! But the worst total recoil from a hand gun I own is my Mag-na-ported T/C Contender Super 14" with my WAY over the top 44 mag 300 grain hand loads. It pushes the hand, it wrenches the arm, It twists the back. Why on earth would I ever pull the trigger on that again? It is accurate and it not only kills but DESTROYS whatever it contacts! I use Barns originals, it is a shame they only come in soft point, with a RN/FMJ you could stop run away trains!

I recently commented on mine in another thread, but it is my four inch Model 58 with the Remington HTP rounds. Kills on both ends.

Worst one I've ever owned or shot was a Contender .44 mag with the early skinny, octagonal barrel. I shot some hot reloads from it to get the brass...I didn't reload them and have no idea what they were loaded with....someone gave them to me. (A dumb move; I don't recommend it.) To illustrate: if I shot it with the gun pointed at 9 o'clock, the recoil would push my arm up to 12. I sold it. The ones I have now aren't what you'd consider punishing, but among those that are less comfortable is my J-frame airweight .38 special with +P rounds. Hard to hold on to.

Not a handgun. I have 3 of them. [emoji16]

Mine is a 28-2 in with 180 grain loads.
Worst I have ever seen, but never shot, is a Thompson Center with a 577 Nitro Express barrel. This gun was for sale in an Upstate NY shop now defunct. Not sure if it ever was sold but it sure drew a lot of attention. Can't imagine a 750 grain slug at almost 2000fps out of a handgun.

I had a US Navy flare pistol it was a Mark something. It was a break down with fiberglass grip and Alumilum barrel. I got some inserts made up and fired a few things in it that would bruise your hand. No factory made gun including wild single shots for rifle cartridges held a candle to that one.

Model 65 with combat Pachmayrs when shooting full house 357 loads. A close second is my LC9s with 147gr loads. Something about the narrow grip just gets my bony hands.

Not saying it was a dog . At the time, it was the state of the art for a tiny .380 , and it was well made, surprisingly accurate ( head sized groups @ 25yds ) and reliable with the loads it liked . Just Painful to shoot, for someone with my size hands .

At the time , I put up with the pain , for its usefulness as a BUG . Since then , I have moved away from .380's categorically , in favor of either J frames , or subcompact 9x19.

The worst I have fired is a 4 inch 500 S&W magnum with 700 grain Underwood ammo.Brutal is an understatement!

I believe there is the possibility of a Handbone crunching load with the X frames.
Or just ripping your thumb off.:eek::eek:

While handloaders can achieve serious recoil in most any handgun, the biggest smiles/laughter has been introducing shooters to the M460 3.5".
As they shoot the increasing charge weights a sudden seriousness to the power in their hands is appreciated.
Never had anyone eagerly ask for another max but safe load.

Stay safe
Have fun.

Currently my Freedom Arms 454 with their ammo. Am working on a load that will get the job done without their idea of fun. In the past though not a handgun a Browning pump 10 ga., got tired of my thumb busting my nose with each shot, gave it back to my father in law and told him to sell it.

For me it is the Contender with 10" barrel and .223 round. My wife dubbed it the "handcannon". She shot it once and and said no thank you.

340pd 357 .........

/\/\/\ This is the worst recoiling gun I own. I've shot a Freedom Arms .457 Linebaugh with stout handloads and it pales by comparison.

I can only get about one and a half fingers on the Hogue Bantam grips. The 340 torques so bad with magnum loads that the inside of the trigger guard slams the bottom of trigger finger. If you'd like know what it feels like without spending money on ammo, give your finger a good smack with a ball peen hammer.

It is very interesting to read what different people think about recoil in handguns. Seems like it is as much about hand size as it gun design until you get to the very large hand cannons. Someone is always going to come up with something bigger, for me the 44 mag is my limit. Don't get off on hurting myself!

My current "worst recoiling handgun" is my knuckle busting Ruger Blackhawk (old model) in .41 magnum. It has all the recoil I want, and then some. Without the huge rubber Hogues, it's quite painful.

I'm older & wise enough to not punish my hand & wrist for "enjoyment". My young friend loves shooting the .41 cranked up magnum loads. But now in his mid 20's, he's learned to appreciate the Hogues too.

I chickened out and got a 20 gauge Shockwave.

Back on handguns, the 2.75" Model 69 is the first I've owned where I have declined to shoot it with full power loads. A "starter" 44 mag load with a 200 gr bullet is zesty enough.
My 8" 29 was a real hand stinger with the wood target stocks. Sorry traditionalists but rubber grips have it all over wood for comfort.

My worst recoiler that I have now, no doubt would be my Taurus Tracker, 44 Magnum. If you're not familiar with it, it's about the same size as a K-frame Smith, with a 4" ported barrel, and five shots of 44 Magnum. I say "would be" because I've never fired magnum loads in it, and probably never will. I bought it for 44 Specials, and it's great for that.

But the worst recoiling gun I ever had was of all things a Kel-Tec P-11, 9mm. It wasn't bad for a few rounds, but a couple of times I went over 50 rounds, and both times my arm tingled from my wrist to my elbow for a couple of days after.
