Worth it?

Hi all,
In MA...home of the newly band AR. I have a new non-fired Sport I and I was toying with the idea of swapping out the upper on it to include the FA and dust cover. Should I, is it worth it?

Why? Planning on rolling around in the dirt with it? Never needed either on mine.

The ejection port cover and forward assist do little to stop either of those.

OP, it would not be worth it to me. I have the original Sport with the 1:8 twist barrel and have not had any stoppages that were related to not having a ejection port cover or forward assist. Gun has been covered by red dust from west Texas while hog hunting and just keeps going.

However, it is your rifle... if having those things make you happy, then by all means, add them.

Not obsessing about getting the FA and DC, I'd only do it if I could do it for a reasonable cost. What does a good upper cost, anyway? I'm just happy I got a good AR before the commonwealth band them...for now.

I don't want to be a smarty, but this sort of reminds me of the old analogy of "rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic".

After your AG's unilateral dictate on the 20th, I'm not sure how I would be feeling right now if I were in your shoes. I certainly hope that she is overruled by someone.

My AR platform guns have dust covers and FAs both, but I can't say that I have ever needed them. Since you have to manually close the dust cover, it is usually open, since I forget it's there.

If I were in a sandy, unfriendly environment, say in the Middle East some where, and depending on my firearm to keep me alive, I might feel a little differently about things. The AR platform is less forgiving of debris than say the AK platform. But whatever makes you happy....

I would think you would be able to find stripped uppers for less than $100 still... haven't really looked for one.

On a related note. Can you still build an 80% receiver gun in MA? You aren't buying it, so isn't that a loophole?

If I were in your shoes, I would keep it as is.
In a way I am, I have a Sport 1 and its staying the way it is. FA&DC?
Dont need them, dont think about them and am not worried about them.
So far, 100% reliability in 5 years of use.
Have Fun, more if you can get to a Free State.

I have 3 AR's and two have dust covers and forward assist and the DPMS Sportical I have has neither. All three function as they should and I have never had to use the forward assist on the other two. Even when I was in Vietnam with a M16 in the 4th ID I never had to use the forward assist and I saw lots of combat.

Don't Do It!!

NO...It's a waste of time and money. The rifle is fine w/o the assist and cover and these 2 features, as pointed out, bring nothing to the table regarding function and reliability.
IMO...the 1st gen Sport, which I have, looks much better w/o the assist and cover then the 2nd gen Sport.

I live in Mass and the ban as it stands now is specifically on the sale of an AR through an FFL dealer. They have not banned the possession of an AR. As far as building I think you can, unless the purchase of the serialized lower receiver has to be delivered/transferred through a Mass FFL dealer. Any one interested can check Comm2A website or Mass GOAL website.

Don't waste the money. Leave it stock. An upper is so expensive, you would be better off buying another rifle, if you still can.

Huhnh... I'll bet that you probably can't even buy an upper in Boston right now. Until this mess gets sorted out there, everybody is going to be afraid to sell even parts. Even the BATFE doesn't consider "parts" as a "Firearm". You should be able to buy all the uppers you want to, and all the internal parts as well, but I'll bet that suppliers are afraid to stick their necks out.

If it was me, and you could find one, I would get a complete parts kit. That way, (if you are allowed to keep your gun in the first place), at least you will have repair parts for the future.

In Vietnam we carried our M-16 and our missions were 30 day search and destroy missions in mountains and the jungle over there the DC seemed to help and we had a plastic cover that went over the flash suppressor. Those things helped a little but for use here their help would be small unless you like to lay in the weeds in bad weather.
