The thread on a Prius mounted M61 put an odd idea in my head.

Would an original Gatling Gun, where each action, rotating the barrel, loading a cartridge, firing, ejecting the case is implemented by the turn of the crank... That is to say an independent action of the operator... Would BATFE consider it to be a Class 3 weapon.

I know, I could write Tech Services a letter, but speculating is more fun.

No. Now we need 10 characters.

Saw a new one at a store up in Ormund Beach . They had a sign stating it was not a Class III weapon . They also included the wording from ATF stating so .

No, a Gatling gun is NOT a Class III firearm. It is no different than say, a Winchester 94 .30-30. It takes a manual turn of the crank to rotate a barrel into position and to fire the gun.

Years ago, I was at a North-South Skirmish Association shoot where a New York police office brought the .45-70 Gatling gun that he had hand built. Lots of fun!

Many years ago I saw a demonstration of a Gatling Gun at an NSSA event. The targets were potato chip cans filled with water. I was impressed with how the cans were ruptured right down the seam.

A gatling gun of original design with a hand crank is specifically not considered an NFA device.

Originals are antique and have no federal restrictions whatsoever, modern made ones are simple title 1 firearms and are treated the same as a pistol grip shotgun (Classified simply as a firearm, rather than rifle, pistol or shotgun).

It is also a pre 1898 design, which Federally may well mean it's not a regulated firearm.

Pre 1898 DESIGN don't mean diddly.

Gotta be pre 1899 (not 1898) MANUFACTURE.

Colt Single Action Army is a pre-98 design. So is a 94 Winchester. Still got the 4473 to fill out.

Last time I saw an original Gatling gun offered for sale the price was well into the range of a new house. Probably another one of those things that if you have to ask what it costs you probably can't afford it.
