Would anyone else like to see the old S&W GEN 3 pistols comeback??

Interested in the 3914 or 5904

Ummm, can we do one for the 1970 1/2 Camaro Z-28? And the Titanic, that was a terrific ship!

I mean...
Don't wanna be the downer, but this poll is in the specific area on the specific forum where folks rave about these guns daily. This is kind of like taking a poll regarding term limits but only asking the Distinguished Gentlemen (and women) on the Senate floor.

If we each get to pick one 3rd Gen regular production series that should be made once again, my vote shall be cast for the 10xx series, please.
I would prefer the 1969 Z/28, RS/SS model with the 396. Hugger Orange with the black vinyl roof!
I would very much so like to see the 5904 come back. But, in this day in age how much does anyone think it would sell for?

Yes I would very much like for them to be produced again I already have a 3913 so something in .45 Acp would be My request likely a 4566 or similar

As they were made initially, no MIM or spec changes?

$1,500 at least.

Even some 1911s at that price point have MIM parts.

For S&W to move them, they'd have to be between $700-$1000.Can anyone say "MIM Extractor"? We saw how well that turned out initially with long-extractor Sig P226's.

I'd pay $750'ish for a new 3914, or better yet a 3914TSW! And if they brought the 3914 back, they would also probably offer the 3913 as well. Which I would also buy.

But they won't do any of that, so I'll settle for scouring the used market for these fine pistols!

Hey Grant! I'm a big reader, but seldom poster on your board. Enjoy the insights on the M&P and it's the primary reason I gave them a good extended try before going back to Glock (and occasional third gen)

I would love to see them come back, but leave the melonite or PVD for the M&P.

These should be in S&W's iconic bead blasted stainless. Melonite or PVD might be a contemporary requirement for some segments of the market, but a turn off for most of it. The segment interested in hose treatments will likely seek to apply the finish of their choice themselves.

Stick with the 3913NL, a modernized 3906, 4566, 4516, 1006, 1066 and call it a day.

And post pics of your beautiful 3953!

It is likely the cost would be closer to $2000+ per handgun.

Periodically this subject keeps popping up, and its understandable why: these are pretty well made pistols , and S&W made a diverse enough set that there's something for everyone across the model years.

Today there isnt a market for them anymore. The typical gun shopper today wants what the cops and military use. The latter organizations, being more concerned with a basically functional product they can train everyone to use in a short period of time , choose Glock and similar pistols.
So Joe Citizen buys himself a Glock /M&P/ other models and has done with it.After decades of this, there are LEOs now who can't even work the safety on a 1911!

Atop all of that, as a gun culture hammer fired guns in general are pretty much obsolete as general use pistols, which was the role these semi-autos had back in the day. When the 1006 was a cataloged item, the typical defensive pistol was made out of metal whether it came from America, Italy, or Germany. There was Glock, and that was pretty much it for polymer striker guns.

Today its inverted. Besides legacy Sig P226 variants and Beretta 92s & 1911s, there isnt a thing in the case with a metal frame up for sale. The only reason those two models are selling is likely because of amortization costs courtesy US Government contracts. Once Uncle Sam at the Federal level goes full striker fired , those models will dissapear into the "Special Order" pages....and thereafter into the "Discontinued" list.

All of this may seem hard to bear. I don't post this happily. I love my S&W semi auto too, and I'd love nothing better then to walk into a dealer and order myself a railed melonite 1006 decock only with VTAC-type adjustable rabbit ear sights and a smooth DA/SA trigger. But its an economic impossibility when I'd be the only dude who'd buy one.

About the only way around this would be to put together a prepaid group buy here for a set of handguns, but then we'd all have to agree to order one specific model with one specific set of features, which is an even bigger impossibility.

Order a one of S&W Forum set of 5906s, and the 4006 fans **** bricks. Order them with adjustable sights, and the fixed sight fans won't order. So on and so forth....

It won't cost that much.

They could likely do it for a little more than their 1911's sell for.

Seriously?

Cmon people. The 5906 isn't on the list. That's unbelievable. It's by far the most recognizable of the 3rd gens. Had a 5906, traded it for a glock 21. Yep I know, I went to the dark side.

BUT, I would really like to see the all stainless 5906 come back.

I believe the hammer fired guns with second strike and DAestOe the safest semi autos for the novice CCW folks. I always recommend wheel guns for most new ccw carriers.
The SW GEN 3 would fill a niche.
I have 2 glocks 19 & 27 and an LCP which collect dust.
I love wood and metal and plastic guns are just tools.
Bring them back.
CS9 40 and 45 top of the list for me.

Yes, I'd like to see at least a few of the 3rd Gens come back but as Arik just said ^^^ I don't think I would be a player for them if prices exceed a grand. Currently there is still a pretty good selection on the used market that are in superb condition with prices starting in the $350-$400 range and of course significantly higher for great examples of the scarcer models.

I too am a fan of Smith's 2nd and 3rd gen semi autos, but with a used market making them widely available, I see no reason for new production runs of these old beauties. If having a dead mint version is your thing, S&W offers refinishing services. That cost, plus the used gun cost is still likely to be less than a brand new re-pop.

Guess manufacturers had to make changes due to rising costs of metals these days. Still I think S&W has done a decent joy with their guns especially the Shield line. First one I owned was a Model 39 I paid $125 for new back in 1974. I agree prices for new Generation 3s may be mind boggling.
