I voted for the Model 27 3.5 as I have one and it's a great revolver but not a grail gun to me. The 4 inch model 27-2 was closer to being a grail gun as they are much harder to find.

I hear people say the 4" 27-2 is harder to find than the 3.5" version but is it? That's not my experience at all. I see 4" 27s all over the place. Yes, they were made for a shorter period of time, but the 4" replaced both the 3.5 and the 5" models and I think they cranked out quite a few of them in the 4 years or so they were produced.

Just my perception.

As for the original question, it's like asking which is better... blond or brunette?

I voted for the M29 - because I don't have one yet, but I do have a 4" M57 representing the .41 in my collection.

SP- We seem to disagree on this subject and so I can only tell you what I think and have seen over the past 3 years. I watch GB all the time and have for the past 3 years and P&R 4 inch guns come up hardly at all and there are always high priced 3.5 inch 27-2's up there. I also haven't gone to any gun show where I haven't seen a 27-2 3.5 but I've only seen 1 27-2 4 inch and that was at the Tulsa show last year.

I don't have any production numbers on these two barrel lengths and I wish someone could publish them. The SCOSW 3rd edition says that there is a premium for the 27-1. A premium for the 27-2 4 inch and a slight premium for the 3.5 inch.

I have no vested interest in saying what I'm saying because I do own both barrel lengths.

:) I voted for the model 27. I don't have one of any barrel length so that makes it a grail gun for me. In the Nashville area you don't see that many S&W's at gun shows, but maybe some day I will find one. Don

I like a service type revolver so M-58 it is for me. Still looking for a good shooter grade.

Like I said, it's a matter of perception. I haven't seen a 3.5" 27 for some time, now. I have seen a couple of 4" versions pop up now and then but also pretty infrequent of late. Since I am not buying guns these days I don't peruse the auction sites so I don't know what's going on there. About 8 years back I thought I wanted a 4" 27 and went looking. Found 4 within a couple weeks but in the end decided I didn't really want it that badly.

No doubt there were fewer 4" guns made because of the shorter production time but again, like I said, this one replaced two models in the catalog and I suspect they turned out quite a few of them in a short time so it's likely not as rare as some suggest.

As far as paying extra for a 4" gun, I would not. I am not a collector who has to have one to complete the set and I think the 3.5 is more desirable, anyway.

I've sold a couple of model 58's because they did not shoot to point of aim with any of the ammo I tried. I basically stay with adjustables for that reason. I voted for the 27, I have a 3.5" and really like it.

My name is Combat Diver and I'm a .41 oholic. Owned several 58 in the past and still have a very nice one and will take another.

Rough choice because they are different animals . Both is the only answer . When that Sophie was made to choose , the only correct response was to kung fu the nazis and escape with both kids . That's why I like that Angolina girl better than whats-her-name Streep .
If I had a grail gun I would carry it and shoot it blueless and beyond . If I found the Holy Grail , I would be drinking my Ovaltine from it right now . On the eve of Resurrection Day , I offer my humble testimony , he would have wanted you to do the same .

I have to echo what Art says about the rarity of the 4". Buy what makes you happy.

I had a model 27 with 3.5 barrel. The gun was way too heavy for anything but target/range practice. Don't know what frame the second one is but, buy whichever will make you happy, not on opinion of others.
Good Luck
