Caught in an interesting position here. I love the looks of a 645 and all that it stands for- beauty, American Made, accurate, and security. These are works of art to me.

Someone wants to trade me an AK47 Yugo UF (M70AB2?) for a 645. I am not needing an AK47, nor do I feel like I have to have one to fight off the Zombies or battle for food after the Apocalypse. I think they are cool and fun to have, but not sure if the trade will feel right.

What are your thoughts and opinions?

I'm not exactly a collector, so I don't see a need to have two of the exact same firearm. I have different barrel lengths of the same model, and different finishes, but not duplicates. If I had two exactly the same, I would, if I wanted an AK47, which I don't . . .

Hope that helps.

Without question, I would make the trade.

If it is an early "true" Yugoslavian AK you will unequivocally come out well ahead.

Even if it is a more recent Yugo, I would still make the trade.

I need to mention I am not at all well versed in AK's. This would be my first, if I trade. Also, this is a UF- underfolder model.

Without meaning to step on any toes of AK/variant enthusiasts, I'd not trade a Sigma for one.

Then again, I'd not trade a 645/4506 for an AR, and I find the AR to be a serviceable service-type rifle.

There's no particular shortage of examples of either rifle design, but like real estate, they aren't making anymore 645's.

You've only gotta suit yourself, though. That's what it comes down to when you look at the bottom line. ;)

Short answer: I'd probably not trade.
Short reason: I'd rather have the 100% original factory version of something unless it was extraordinary.

Long answer and reason: Value-wise about the same between a S&W 645 and M70AB2 so the person offering you a trade is making a reasonable proposition. I have fair amount of experience with AK-47's but the majority of my experience is with pre-ban, i.e. prior to the 1994ban, guns or a "sportsterized" version of a pre-ban gun. A M70AB2 is a parts gun with some parts from Yugoslavia (I guess that's why people call it a Yugoslavian gun?), the receiver is made in the U.S., and the barrel is, I believe, also U.S. made but from a different manufacturer from the receiver (as best I recall). I believe there are also other U.S. parts on the M70AB2. By having enough U.S. parts you can have an AK-47 with all the pre-ban features (pistol grip, bayonet lug, threaded muzzle). The U.S. parts fulfill a 922 compliance requirement. Years ago AK-47 parts guns had a less-than-stellar reputation for many reasons (quality, single stack magazines, non-interchangeable parts, dependability) but some of the newer parts guns have a better reputation. I think the M70AB2 has a better reputation (?). I much prefer pre-ban, "matching" numbers, made at an arsenal that is dedicated to building the AK-47. I prefer pre-ban Chinese AK-47's but pre-ban Eastern European makers are good too. From experience I can tell you these matching numbers, arsenal built guns are well-built, extraordinarily reliable, and reasonably accurate but like all good things they've become expensive. If I had no other rifles and was really wanting an AK-47 I might make the trade but AK-47 parts guns are plentiful and the original, S&W built 645 is not made any more.

I don't think I would but that's just me, but it's up to each person to decide what they would enjoy having or shooting more. I had one 645 back in 92 and sold when I got married for stuff we needed. Glad the wife is gone, still miss the 645...

I have no love for the AK-47. 100% reliability is insufficient reason for me to own one. Clearly, it is the weapon of choice for the revolutionaries of the world because it is ubiquitous, ammunition is just as available as the weapon itself, it's easy to use, etc. So no denigration intended but to my hands and eyes, including the shooting, it's a piece of junk. Reliable junk, sure. So, when I become a revolutionary, I want one. Maybe three or four. And millions of rounds of ammunition.

In the meantime, I'll stick to my AR, my M1A, and my S&W pistols, thank-you-very-much.

Just mi dos centavos in re your trade concept.

I'll add a thought - if you do not have a semi-automatic, mil-spec rifle available to you and believe that you should then the trade works fine because it upgrades your personal battery. Otherwise, ICK!!! :D

Hell no, the 645 is the finest out of the box 45 ever made. AK-47's are a dime a dozen and aren't the most accurate things either.

I don't know what a 645 is. I do own a Yugo underfolder. I have shot just about every configuration of AKs, the underfolder is my least favorite. Most will agree that the underfolder is the most uncomfortable to shoot. I actually regret getting mine.

That is what I heard. It is recommended for a newbie owner of an AK47, NOT to get an underfolder.

What are your thoughts and opinions? By the way, I have two 645s.

Not unless the 645 was a real beater. I feel the same way you do about the S&W autos and the AK47. I wouldn't mind having the AK but would not give up the 645 to do it.

No, I wouldn't. The 645 is on my "to get list". I have a Bushmaster Patrolman's Carbine and it's the only Semi-Auto Service type rifle I own. A joy to shoot and more accurate than I can shoot it. If I were to add another rifle to my collection, it would be a S&W model AR/M&P 15.

But that's just MY opinion; if you want to add an AK47 to YOUR collection, then by all means, do the trade.

Normally I would say no because the 645 hasn't been made in 25+ years, while that Yugo AK is still currently sold new, & very easy to find. However, since you have 2 645's, that changes things. I love AK's, & own 8 different variants, & was lucky to pick up a mint 645 a few months ago. So keep your best 645, & trade the other for the AK. GARY

As a lover of all things related to Michael Kalashnikov I wouldn't trade (saying this because I cannot see the pic). Some of you have safes full of S&W. I have safe full of AKs.

Yes they come in as parts kits for the most part. The earliest ones were excellent, circa 2002 or so. All the correct parts, bla bla...then Century got a hold of the kits and they kinda became Bleh. Not all their fault but they do share a large portion of the blame. They like to cut corners in manufacturing. The,M70s didn't come out bad but they didn't come out good either and selling one later down the road is like trying to sell a Hipoint. You can but you will loose $$$$.
They will/should work. But then again so should a Hipoint. Underfolders are weird. Try it before you buy it. They look cool but personally I don't like the way they shoulder

You must have other battle rifles for the Apocalypse? *** I think they are cool and fun to have,***** You said you have never owned one, have you ever fired one? If you have fired one did you get more pleasure than firing your 645? But, you think they are cool and fun to have?

I do not care for the hooked /square trigger guard, and I do not like the under folder, unless pre ban Russian. You have 2 645's, no AK's, would you have more fun with 1-645 and 1-AK ?
The other possibility is that you need a little quality time with an AK. Borrow one from a friend, 20 mags, 2 drums, buy a 1000 rds of 762 X39, plenty of targets, go out and fire the mags & drums 750 rds. Clean the gun, return it to friend with the remaining 250 rds, Thank Him/Her for the use. Repeat as needed. Be Safe,
