Local dude posted this 6" no dash 686 for trade for an AK.

I have a WASR with perfect straight sights, and tight mag for an AK. Less than 100 rounds thru it that I'm thinking about trading for it.

I hate folding stocks, but when I bought it around 10 years ago I figured the folder may be worth a lot more in the future. I have the funds to buy the AK I want now with nice wood furniture.

Would you make the trade...if the dude says yes?

I really like the AK, and have a 686-1 2.5" at S&W right now for the recall.

If I knew those were the original grips I'd be more interested. How can you tell if the grips are originals?

Me too. I'm leaning towards just buying another AK but keeping the folder. Now AR's I have a few of!

I'm not a fan of 6" barrels anyhow.

Do you have another rifle of some kind? If this was my only rifle I wouldn't. You say you have the funds to buy the AK you want but if you make the trade will you buy it? I love my s&w revolvers but I feel you need some sort of fighting rifle as well. Like the old saying- pistols are for fighting your way to your rifle! If you're all set with another rifle then make the trade- I'm pretty sure I would.

Since you're not fond of the folding stock, and would rather buy the AK you really want, I'd say go for the trade. A WASR for a 686 is a great deal, in my opinion.

Revolvers and Kalashnikovs, that's an unbeatable combination!

That 686 looks a bit dubious to me... I don't like the way the "turn line" looks on the cylinder.. it's not a typical narrow line pattern, why is it wider and rougher looking than what is usually seen? I think that indicates a problem, an expensive problem, lurks.

The grip... doesn't look right in fitment or shape, the rear grip frame is "proud" of the wood, the top of the grip looks flattened. Also looks like someone has polished the gun out.. given the degree of glare on the barrel/frame, the normal factory brushed stainless surface does not do that.

Side plate screw near grip looks buggered... It all cries out "bubba'ed"... and I'd pass.

If that's a photo of the actual revolver he wants to trade, it doesn't look all that great to me.

I agree with all of the above. Good eye Gun hacker! Hey, is that why you know so much about a 'hack job' ? LOL! Seriously, all of those are good points, and hard to detect on this phone screen, but once pointed out, "I see" said the blind man.

I wouldn't. As Gunhacker pointed out, things just don't look right about that revolver and those grips are definitely Not original to the gun.

Wow, tough choice for me as I already have a 686 with 6.0 inch long barrel, and have no need for an AK. Assuming I had a chance to look at the 686, and it checked out okay, I'd be inclined to trade for it as I have more use for it (the 686) than I do for the AK. Dollar-wise, in my opinion, the value for both is about even.

Tough call.
A new WASR is in the $600.00 range now.
I'd want more pics of the 686 and to know if it's M stamped.
Guess it depends on which gun I like best and if my AK was a "duplicate". Pretty easy to replace the AK ..... surely it's more commonly found than a no dash 686.

If he's local and close enough, I wouldn't commit to a trade until I've checked out the 686 in hand. Easy to get burned with just photos. Ask me how I know.

I'm not gonna trade, but looks can be fixed...sometimes. I paid $540 for this 686-1 a few weeks ago. Spent less than 3 hours on it to get it looking like a sharp dressed man. It's at Smith for the M stamp right now. Roll marks are clean and sharp, pics make them lool light.

Sure, the snubby needed cosmetic care, but the 6" the OP is talking about looks like it got dragged behind a truck!, Lord knows what the lockwork needs and who's to say there isn't end shake, etc.

A S&W 686 6 shot 4" or 6" bbl revolver goes for about $600 and the AK for a bit more in my area.

If you don't like the folding stock, well trade it for another AK with a regular stock. I'd bet that there would be many people willing to do that deal. Me, I like the regular full stock AKs. But, you'll be on the losing side of that trade deal too.

So, why not just buy the revolver and sell the AK?

The 686 looks like a gleaming jewel, but Gunhacker got me to blow the picture up and yeah, it looks bad. Look for a 686 that you want to buy, and do with the AK what you will.
