WOW is this good!!!

A friend turned me on to Hendricks about seven years ago, and it's become the spirit I drink the most. Wonderful with a slice of lemon cucumber. I generally don't otherwise adulterate it, though I've got a few mint/cuke recipes for it that are pleasant.

Back when I was *A Tough Guy* -40 some years ago- I got really stupid and drank a 5th (remember those?) of SloGin - NoMo Gin for me :o

The very next weekend I tried the same trick with a 5th of Tequila - Same result.

Now it's a bit of Rye or a few beers and I'm good.
An occasional box of fine wine too :)

What is it about the Brits, gin and the tropics? I spent a year at taxpayer expense in a very hot and damp climate, but never got the gin habit.

"Tonic" is quinine water. Quinine is a preventative/cure for Malaria.

In India, the Brits were getting Malaria, and had to take quinine. Quinine tastes nasty.

They mixed it with gin, so as to be able to force it down. Remember Mary Poppins - "A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down"? Same thing.

Dorgnacs is a great place to restock a bar. Good prices and a good selection. I also like it when they have a sale on Porterhouse steak.

A few blocks down Vets is Martin's Wine Cellar. They have some of the best prices in the area and depending on what you buy, one of these 2 will have the best price.

Winn Dixie has their store brand gin on sale for $10.99 for a 1.75 Liter bottle. :D:D

I like Tanqueray, especially their vodka. Mostly though, I'll stick to Mr. Beam and a Coke.

Ahh, yes, Hendricks with a splash of Schweppes tonic and a bit of lemon zest.

Just the thing when lounging about in one's safari jacket and pith helmet (don't dwell too long there...)
Extraordinary, by Jove!

However, I have also learnt since last summer of the pleasures of Kraken Rum.
Most refreshing with crushed ice, a quality ginger ale and a slice of lime.

Or even taken neat in a beat up old pewter mug, pirate style, as long as there is salt in the air. Arrrggghhhh.....

Hendricks is good. I like Plymouth Gin and my wife likes a gin called G'Vine but I can't find it around here any longer. Thanks guys now I want some gin, I really do!

Caj, Sapphire on the rocks with a couple of stuffed green olives is my favorite gin drink - I consider that a VERY dry Martini. I consider Bombay Sapphire about as good as it gets in the gin department, so if you think Hendricks is good, I might give it a try...

When I run out of Sapphire in a few years. ;)

Quinine also helps to relieve leg cramps. I've used quinine pills for that purpose when I overwork my leg muscles.

Excruciatingly painful cramps go away after about five minutes with the pills.

for the grape koolaid and booze crowd,we used to make purple passions. used welchs grape juice and everclear grain alcohol. mixed in a 5gal bucket filled to the top with chunk ice. in the winter time, there were some nice pictures in the snow the next morning.

In Japan, the tonic does not have quinine in it because quinine is considered a drug. So they have some sort of substitute that approximates the taste. I drink gin tonics, but I do think they taste better outside of Japan. Bit too sweet here.

Say, you know what is really good? Gin martinis with raw oysters. Yum.

"Gin martini" is redundant. A martini is a gin drink. That other thing is a "vodka-based martini-style cocktail". Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I wouldn't drink one.

Hendricks is good Gin, but not Gin is as good as Bombay Saphire, IMHO.

I first learned to drink Bombay Saphire Gin, from Richard Marcinko, personally.

Everytime I taste it, I think of him.

He was a Man well ahead of his time...

Marcinko also got me started on Bombay Sapphire on the rocks, but through his writings. SEALS speak verily! I should write him; I don't believe I've ever thanked him adequately for that. ;)

Man, I crack up everytime someone starts a thread on hooch..... Ah the memories shared!

Surprised nobody's mentioned New Amsterdam. By far my favorite. Haven't found it around here- have to go to the NH Liquor outlet for it enroute to SebagoSon's.

Sounds good Caj. I'll have to check it out.

I never cared for gin until I was stationed in the Republic of Panama; found out that gin and tonic was a great way to feel cooler (at least on the inside) and have loved them since, especially on warm days.

I've got to admit; too much Alabama redneck in me to have ever tried gin, but now you guys have me curious. First you got me hooked on S&W revolvers, now I'm well on my way to becoming a professional alcoholic thanks to the various booze threads. (Although some WERE started by me. :) I feel like I'm committing blasphemy now since I'm drinking a whiskey sour made with Maker's Mark. Almost too good to NOT drink straight.
