Here is the letter I just wrote,

I urge you to consider the real issues that face us in the wake of Sandy Cook Elementary shooting and the other travesties that have occurred in the past. As a law abiding citizen, I express my right to carry a concealed firearm. Historically, laws have not kept criminals from accessing things like drugs, alcohol, and firearms. All the legislation to reduce magazine capacity and limit firearm ownership will do is dis-arm law abiding citizens. I strongly agree that our end goal is universal - keep guns out of criminals hands and keep our communities safe. Lets face the deeper issues of mental health, stricter punishments for violating laws, and strengthening the data base to keep guns from the mentally unstable, as well as eliminating the gun show loop-hole. I see the media and politicians reaction to these tragic events as emotional. We need to step back and face the DEEPER issues at hand. Guns are not the ROOT of the problem. Let us attack the root. The societal issues that drive people to act this way. I will join you hand in hand in that challenge. An analogy to the reaction of this gun-control craze: If a drunken teen kills a family in a DUI accident, do we need to put speed governors or breathalyzers in all vehicles? No, we need to make stricter rules to punish the offenders (especially repeat offenders), and attack the social acceptability of drunken driving. Let us join forces and combat these issues together. Please consider the real issues at hand when participating in he gun-control debate. Thank you for your time.

Thank you for contacting me regarding the horrific tragedy that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. I appreciate hearing your thoughts on this issue, and my thoughts and prayers remain with the victims and families of this senseless and appalling act of violence.

In the wake of the shooting in Newtown, which left twenty-six innocent members of the community dead, many of them young children, Americans across the country are searching for answers on how we can prevent such tragic events from happening in the future. I believe we must do all we can to put laws and policies in place to prevent future tragedies such as this one. Doing that will require a common-sense debate on a comprehensive approach that examines all relevant issues, including access to firearms, mental healthcare, and the prevalence of violence in video games and media. Additionally, Senator Feinstein has stated her intent to introduce legislation concerning access to firearms at the start of the 113th Congress. To date, that legislation has not been introduced. As always, it is important that we not unnecessarily infringe on the legitimate Second Amendment rights of responsible gun owners.

Like you, I have always been an advocate for Second Amendment rights. My family, like the great state of North Carolina, has a long tradition of hunting and gun ownership, and I take great pride in that heritage. During my tenure in the North Carolina Senate I continuously supported the responsible use of firearms. As your United States Senator, I will always be committed to protecting these fundamental, constitutional rights.

I oppose Sen. Feinstein's New Version of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban because it makes no sense. NONE of the proposed portions of the proposed bill would have had any effect on any of the shootings we have suffered through. As all Americans, I am saddened and sickened by the acts of a madman that took the lives of young children in CT.

I am extremely disappointed that many federal legislators have thrown their support behind a renewal of a federal "assault" weapons ban (AWB).

CT has an AWB more stringent than the federal AWB that sunsetted. It did nothing to stop the acts of a madman. No amount of legislation can prevent the criminally insane bent upon destruction from acting heinously. To target the objects that an unstable person uses to act out their psychotic impulses may make us feel warm and fuzzy, but it is not sound public policy and will only impact law-abiding gun owners in the Mountain State and across the USA.

As sportsmen know, the AWB largely banned cosmetic and comfort features such as muzzle breaks that reduce felt recoil and muzzle climb for a more comfortable and accurate target practice, forward hand grips that offer greater stability, adjustable shoulder stocks that allow for adjustments for shooters afield with heavy clothing. The notion that the presence or absence of such a feature is the deciding factor as to whether a madman will act heinously is absurd.

The US has a crime and violence problem - not a gun problem. FBI/DOJ statistics indicate that nearly 75% of all gun crime is related to gang activity, yet federal prosecutions of gun crime are shamefully low. For example, the President’s home district of Illinois has the most stringent gun laws in the nation but ranks among the highest in violent gun crime, and yet every federal district, save one, has higher rates of prosecution of gun laws.

Violent crime, and violent gun crime in particular, has decreased since the expiration of the federal AWB, even as gun ownership is at record highs and more Americans are exercising their fundamental right to bare arms than ever before. The notion that the presence or absences of the features above are the deciding factor as to whether a gang-banger knocks off a liquor store is absurd: as if a forward hand grip drives a criminal to act.

Crime statistics also show that 4 times as many Americans are killed each year with blunt objects, and twice as many killed with bare hands, than are killed with a long-gun of any kind: labeled "assault" or not. Banning modern sporting rifles or shotguns with comfort features will not reduce crime or violence.

The magazine ban in effect during the previous federal AWB had no impact on crime or violence. CT also has such as ban and it had no effect on that tragedy either. When a gun is used in the commission of a crime, the average numbers of rounds fired is 1.2 rounds. Banning standard issue magazines will not reduce crime or violence. However, it will impact lawful owners renting time at their local range as they will spend more (rented) time loading magazines than putting rounds on target.

The UK, with whom we share a common history and a common culture, has tried the gun ban approach. In the mid 1990s, the UK banned private ownership of guns and made self defense generally unlawful. Since that time, violent crime has doubled - increasing by nearly 90% in the last decade alone. Today, the UK has a violent crime rate of nearly 4 times the USA (UK: 2,095 per 100,000, US: 466 per 100,000).

Massive social-science research shows the ineffectiveness of gun control in reducing crime and violence. It is a source of continuous amazement that gun control advocates ignore the results of criminological, historical and econometric studies by reputed scholars.

The formation of public policy must be based on a pragmatic desire to reach achievable results - not hot-button political whims or emotional trends of the day. To reduce crime and violence, our public institutions must focus on the source - not the tool that a perpetrator of violence chooses to use illegally in his criminal acts. While gun bans are ineffective, focusing on conflict resolution, character-building, alternatives to violence training, gang resistance, urban development & employment, problem-solving, and identifying/reporting/treating the mentally ill will reduce violence in our society.

To support a gun ban that will have no effect on rates of violent crime or stop madmen from acting heinously is ill-advised. To support such as misguided policy is an affront to constituents in the Mountain State and around the nation. It will only impact lawful gun owners and sportsmen. Please do not pursue a reinstatement of the failed and ineffective federal "assault" weapons ban.

Mr Boehner, there are laws on the books for gun control and the current administration, White House Department of Justice/ATF violated them with fast and furious, Why has the Executive branch of our great Republic and Democracy been allowed to do this? Innocent people died and where maimed from this action , How many firearms ended up in the wrong hands? Does anyone actually know the number? Laws where violated people died as a direct result of these actions and policies by those that are entrusted to uphold the law and have also taken an oath of office to defend it.
Law enforcement broke the law do we need more laws and bans where was the due process for these actions?
The use of a hanis deplorable act and tragedy committed upon innocent victims of Sandy Hook Connecticut for elected officials to further agendas is deplorable. Please Mr Speaker when addressing more restrictions and watering down the 2nd Amendment I can only ask that the memory of all that have perished both protecting and serving this great Republic and Nation not be in vain nor those that have lost their life due to tragedies committed by sick individuals. We all have lost sight of what our fore fathers put in motion for us please aide in restoring it.
Common decency, Education, family values, and respect for our fellow citizen is what is needed. Not new laws infringing on our Constitution and inalienable rights .

Dear Dr. Benishek:

I’m writing once more to express my growing alarm about the campaign to demonize firearms (and their owners) in the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. Every administration seeks to use current events to advance their agenda. However, this administration has proven particularly adept in this tactic, largely by its thinly veiled partnership with news media and the entertainment industry.

I’ve read the proposals which originated in Sen. Feinstein’s office, and I’ve read her comments from the 1994 era. I’ve also seen the legislation recently offered (and then withdrawn) from the Illinois legislature. The only up side to these developments is that they have unmasked the true intensions of leftist politicians. These folks are breathlessly panting for dramatic changes in our social order. The power they seek over our everyday lives leaves me deeply unsettled.

It would be great if we could have an honest debate about the effectiveness of gun control measures already on the books. I think the data indicates compliance with legislation affects only the people who aren’t the problem, leaving the violently criminal segment of society largely unhindered. John Lott’s comprehensive research on the relationship between gun control and crime is compelling, if politically inconvenient. Historically, banning firearms and declaring weapons free zones routinely endangers rather than protects society, because it enables the lawless while disarming the lawful.

By conservative estimates, some three million AR platforms and hundreds of millions of standard capacity magazines exist in our society. That doesn’t count many millions of other semi-automatic platforms, both military and civilian, in common circulation. Moreover, there are in excess of eight million citizens across the country who are legally carrying concealed firearms-far more than at any time in American history. And the rate of firearms violence across the board is at historic lows, notwithstanding the recent tragedies. This isn’t my opinion. It comes from the most recent reports from both CDC and FBI.

I strongly believe there are more effective ways to address the roots of these atrocities. For example, the Sandy Hook travesty, and other recent high profile mass shooting events, highlights a thorny issue which gets much less press, viz. how can society do a better job of identifying, treating and, when necessary institutionalizing individuals who need mental health care? I understand abuses occurred in an earlier time, but I suspect the reforms of the 1980s went too far, flooding urban areas with homeless folks and leaving caring families and society in general without adequate options for dealing with the profoundly mentally ill. I find it particularly striking how many times, in the wake of mass shootings, friends, neighbors and schoolmates acknowledge awareness of mental health problems in the perpetrator. As the husband of a mid-level health care provider, I appreciate the scarcity of resources and legal options for treatment of these folks. We really have to do better.

Then there’s the issue of our changing social mores, including our mores about violence. I’ve been exposed to video games which are popular with our young people. We’ve come a long way since PacMan! While I’m sure most people can “play” these graphically violent games while maintaining cognitive separation between the “game” and reality, clearly some cannot. And even those who engage in mass video killings without acting out in society must surely experience unhealthy desensitizing to violence. Again, recent mass murderers, including the shooter at Sandy Hook, were deeply immersed in this alternative, violent reality. And I haven’t even touched on the motion picture industry’s love affair with graphic violence. The recent anti-gun campaign of current actors offers deliciously sarcastic irony.

I’ve read studies which indicate that something in excess of eighty percent of gun violence in our country is gang related. There is a kind of sociopathic behavior cultivated by the breakdown of society-particularly in our urban areas. If draconian gun control could curb criminal violence, wouldn’t you think it would show up in places like Chicago? 530+ murders in 2012 illustrates the bankruptcy of this strategy.

Given all the above, it won’t surprise you to learn I’m active in shooting sports, including competitive shooting. I’m also a certified firearms instructor. I’ve been watching the political left for decades. I’m convinced neither the president nor Sen. Feinstein are good faith players in gun control discussions. All federal registration schemes are merely a prelude to confiscation. These folks know how to play the incrementalism game. Possession of unregistered firearms in the black-listed categories will be a felony. By the stoke of the president’s pen, you’re going to have a bunch more felonious constituents. I believe that would be a travesty.

Please pardon this overly long missive. I’m deeply, deeply concerned. I sincerely hope you’ll stand against this ill-conceived and disingenuous effort against lawful gun owners.

As your voting constituent, I ask you to resist the emotional knee-jerk reaction to enact more restrictive laws pertaining to lawful gun ownership and the objects associated with them.

The murder of unarmed women and children is a heinous act, but please note that the worst cases of these random mass shootings have occurred in GUN-FREE ZONES as designated by law already, and confirms that an armed perpetrator will prevail over an unarmed victim(s) with monotonous regularity…this will be true regardless of the firearm or the magazine capacity of the firearm.

I believe legislating an object(s) in an attempt to prevent such human tragedies is not the proper course of action…please DO NOT support such action !

Dear Senator,
We are at an important point in our history. As you know 27 innocent victims were killed at Sandy Hook by a deranged young man. There is no law that can prevent that....but there is a law that may have helped perpertrate this crime. Gun Free Zones mean nothing to a criminal bent on self destruction and murder. This law only affects law abiding citizens. Had this not been a Gun Free Zone....a citizen with a concealed carry permit and the ability to use their hand gun may have stopped this man before he killed so many people. Laws only affect law abiding people...criminals couldn’t care less what the law is.
I am an older Veteran of the Vietnam War. At 17 years old I took an Oath to defend the Constitution. Right now our second ammendment is under attack. I have friends that died fighting for freedom and we have many national cemeteries filled with brave men that paid the supreme sacrifice so the rest of us could be free. Many of our citizens take our freedom for granted....because they did not live in WW2 Germany, Somolia, Rewanda, Sierra Leone, Cambodia and so many other places I could name where a brutal government murdered their own defenceless people....some in ways I would not mention because the methods used are beyond the comprehension of most people.
I take the second ammendment and for that matter...the whole bill of rights seriously. My Oath to defend the Constitution has not ended nor diminished. I owe that to the future generations of Americans. Many men paid for my freedom and I owe it to the next generation to carry the ball. You as a representative of the people have also sworn to uphold the constitution and there is a clause in the second ammendment that says “shall not be infringed” I know that you know what that means. Because some deranged person murdered innocent people I do not want my Representative thinking they need to attack my right to self defence. The second amendment is an insurance that the American people have the ability to throw off the yoke of a brutal government if it ever becomes necessary, and we need to be armed as well as any enemy that would try to take our freedom.
There are things that can be done to protect children in schools...Our President does not depend on Gun Free Zones to protect him. He has trained armed men that will confront any attacker....and that works in schools also. Banning semi automatic rifles and high capacity magazines is an infringement on my freedom to protect myself and family and unacceptable to me. I deserve the same tools to protect my family as the President has to protect his family. I doubt his protection will be limited to specific rifles or limit magazine capacity.
I hope you defend our second ammendment and our freedom and those of us that care about freedom are watching closely just what our representatives do next in Washington.

I am deeply saddened and appalled by the senseless and horrific act of violence that occurred in Newtown, Connecticut. My thoughts and prayers remain with the victims, their families, and the Newtown community.

As Americans continue to mourn with the people of Newtown, there are a lot of unanswered questions. As President Obama said, "no single law or set of laws will eliminate evil." But, we do need a thorough and thoughtful discussion in Washington and across the country about how we can best prevent senseless acts of violence. While I believe that denying the Second Amendment rights of law abiding citizens will not change the behavior of those intent on using firearms to commit horrific crimes, I support a thorough review of our laws, including how we deal with mental illness, to determine what can be done to deter and prevent mass shootings.

In response to this tragedy, we must employ a comprehensive approach to firearm safety that includes improving access to mental health services and better enforcement of our current laws. Dear Senator Shaheen,
I am concerned that you would consider limiting the magazine capacity of my firearms. I consider limiting magazine capacity an infringement on my second amendment. The President has armed protection as do many other Politicions. I doubt they are going to limit their magazine capacity and for good reason. They also have fully automatic weapons. My rifles are semi automatic, they are not “assult weapons” and are not fully automatic. I deserve the same ability to protect my family that any President deserves. I have served my country and fought for our freedom and I place a very high value on that freedom.
I care every bit as much about the safety of our children in school as any other person does and was appaled by what happened in Sandy Hook. However, I feel the the Gun Free Zone Law contributed to that school becoming a target. The law insures that someone like me will not be in an area where a CCW holder could have made a difference. Its a bad law that does nothing to stop a rampage. Preventing me from having a high capacity magazine will never prevent a criminal from committing a crime....they could care less what the law is. However limiting my magazine capacity could affect my ability to defend my family in an emergency situtation. The second amendment is not about hunting.
I an an NRA life member and I vote. I will be paying attention to what is voted on and who casts the vote to infringe on my second amendment and I will vote accordingly. “Not to be infringed” is easy for me to understand. I hope our elected representatives also understand it. We all agree on protecting our children and common sence tells me that a new law will not do it. Taking security measures at the schools can make a difference. Gun Free Zone tells a criminal that he has until the police arrive to do all the damage he can do. A sign saying deadly force will be used to defend these children would carry more weight...and back it up with safe guards.
I hope you never have to defend your life or your family....and if you ever have to, I hope you consider the laws you pass that affact the law abiding citizens and are in a position to be able to properly and legally defend your self or family. America is about Freedom...please keep that in mind when you cast your vote.

As you know, President Obama formed a gun task force and he is due to receive its recommendations this week. As this debate continues and should I have the opportunity to vote on this issue, I will keep your views in mind.

In the coming weeks I am having meetings with teachers, parents, students and gun owners to listen to their views on what can be done to better ensure the safety of our children in our schools. Great ideas begin with those that are invested in their community and I want to make sure I am prepared for the large task ahead in Washington.
