I picked up three brand new guns this afternoon from our local gun store: S & W 640 Pro, S & W 63 and a Glock 23.

After spending about $1,900.00 in their store you'd think that they would treat me like a friend. But why step out of character. They've always treated their customers like they were intruding on their time and turf. The sooner you were gone the happier they are.

The only thing that they have going for them is that they have an awesome amount of inventory of new guns and that they come within $30.00 or $40.00 of the big mail order companies like Bud's Guns.

In any event the 640 Pro, with is a five shooter, came with moon clips that hold 8 rounds. Naturally they don't fit the gun. I pointed this out to the gun store employee and he said, "Whatever comes with the gun is in the box. We don't pack them; we just sell them."

I decided that having this resolved on a local level was a farce. I sent this e-mail to Smith and Wesson:

Sirs,

This afternoon I picked up my new 640 Pro (Serial # CSN***).

The cylinder is machined to accept moon clips. However the moon clips (3) that were packed with the gun accommodate 8 rounds and the 640 holds 5 rounds. The moon clips will not fit the gun.

My local gun store showed a distinct disinterest in addressing this issue. ("We don't build the guns. Whatever comes with the gun is in the box.")

I would like to exchange the incorrect clips with clips that will fit the gun.

Please advise how to proceed.

Regards,

It went out after business hours so S & W won't see it until Monday. I'll post their response when I get it.

You might get a better response if you quit using yellow electrons. I can't read it at all.

S&W will make it right.

I wouldn't give a shop like that a penny of my money.

Exactly. How much cheaper are they really if they don't help you and now you're aggravated? One way to look at it is that they are close to internet pricing but I'll pay a little more to have it now. But if you can't fire it until S&W sends you some moon clips, then you really don't "have it now". Might as well have worked with a really good on-line store that stands behind their sales or find a good local shop that will actually be a good partner to work with.

Can you return everything to the gun shop and just order that particular gun/moon clips online?

It's a shame when businesses mistreat their customers.

NOTE: Dark red does not show up on my screen which has a dark background. I guess some of you have a light background and the yellow does not show up. I duplicated it in red. I think we have everyone covered.

The other stores in the area charge way more for product and carry almost no inventory.

By far this is the most anti-customer retailer I've come across since 47th Street Photo went out of business. They had a similar business model. Work cheap and treat the customers like ****.

To make matters worse the store is tiny and filthy and poorly organized. The average weight of the sales staff has to be well over 300 pounds with the tallest being just 5'10" or so.

There is really nothing good to say about them, other than if you shop at Gander Mountain (a nice, clean, well organized store with polite staff) you get raked over the coals price-wise.

But is seems that S & W should not make this type of mistake. I will assume that they will make a simple exchange, but the mistake should not have happened in the first place.

One thing to consider is you live in New York State. From my experiances that state seems to have a shortage of Good Ol Boys. Especially around New York City.

Next the store probably did not carry any moon clips to swap the 627 clips for the correct J Frame clips even if they had been customer oriented.

The 640 will work just fine without moon clips, so the gun is not out of operation. It will load with loose rounds, speedloaders, speed strips as well as moon clips.

Next 38 Special shell cases do not all have the same undercut at the rim. This undercut is where the shells snap into the moon clips. Winchester and some other brands of cases do not work well with moon clips. Remington should work fine. For other brands check the fit in the clips.

The 38 Special clips are only .025 thick, so be careful loading and unloading them. Loading with a tool is probably the best bet. Deluxe Moon Clip Tool

Enjoy the 640, it should make you a good gun.

Thanks for the comments. The moon clips were not the primary driving motivation for buying this gun. I liked the Cylinder and Slide sights, and I bought it for the sights.

But this kind of mistake seems more like a Taurus-type error than a S & W error. More than a little disappointing.

Update

I received this reply this morning from S & W.

I put in a no charge order for your clips. It should take about 5 working days to receive.

You don't have to send the other clips back. If you know anyone at your gun club that could use them just give them away.

Don

I will ask at my gun club if anyone can use these. If not I will ask here.
