i can get wst local and winchester small primers as well.
i can only find 2 loads on IMR database for wst powder in .40cal.
one lists a berrys bullet, the other is hornady. no lead bullet data for wst.
does bullet and primer brand matter if weight and diameter are the same?
i know its matters if the bullets are jacketed or lead.

any wst/lead recipes out there? my kinds like to shoot as fast as they can pull the trigger.

and while im typing,do plated bullets load as jacketed or lead?or is there another book i need with plated data?
i have a lyman 49th now and a lee 2nd edition coming with my press
thanks

You might want to look around for a web site called castboolets.
they can help you on the lead bullet end.

Weight and composition of the bullet are key, and where you are going to start in the basement and work up, you can interchange the load data (i.e: 200gr SWC to 200gr. RN). Primers can make a difference in chronograph speeds if you are trying to duplicate loads exactly, but the only major difference you would need to concerned with is standard vs magnum primers if yours loads are on the top end.

It's never wise to be too casual about substituting components but I generally do what Novalty suggests. WST is not a top end powder in .40SW. It's for target loads. Starting low and working up your load based on the plated bullet data should be safe with lead bullets but I'd suggest you stay away from the load listed with maximum pressure by a few tenths of a grain.

Be sure to check your barrel often and keep it clean. A dirty barrel is never a good thing but with lead in .40SW it can be especially bad.

Might try getting your kids interested in another approach to "marksmanship." Remind them the object of shooting is hitting, not making noise. :D

barrys bullets are plated.iv looked at a ton of different componets the last couple weeks. hard to keep up with em all.
my lyman book has no plated load data in it.
im asking about wst because its easy for me to get, right across the street from work.
my lee book should show up today.

im workin on slowing the kids down.

My old Winchester's 14th edition data guide shows 4.0 grs WST starting load, max load of 5.0 grs, with a 170 gr lead bullet in .40SW. That is about all I find, but if your bullet is close to that, starting with the 4.0 grs load and gradually increasing to something less than 5.0 should give you a functioning load of around 900 FPS according to that data. Be sure to keep an eye on your barrel for accumulation for any excessive fouling immediately in front of the chamber. :)

thanks.
where could i find a copy of the winchester manual?

My 40 minor load is 3.1gr of WST under a 175gr plain or coated LSWC. It makes about 740fps. It shoots softer than a 9mm 115gr factory load in my xdm5.25. On good days, it will stay under 2" @ 25yds. Yes I had to drop a spring rate to get 100% reliability. There is precious little printed data on WST & most handgun calibers. I like it for 9mm & 40 target loads & anything in 45acp.

I really like WST in .40 as well. Target velocities.
The Hogdgon web site has Berry's bullet data in 155, 165, and 180 grain bullets, coded as BERB in their data.
