Hi all! Just received Tim Mullin's book on the Registered Magums last week and in reading thru it I've decided that I need to acquire a box of early 357 Magnum ammo (like yellow and blue box Winchester) from the 1930s or 40s. While I don't own a Registered Mag I'd like a box to go with my 27-2. Can anyone give me a ballpark price on a box of this? I realize that condition is everything but would $200-300 get me into a decent box of it, or am I looking more at $400 or more? Thanks in advance

Not throwing shade, but why? Genuinely curious

Because it's an original 70 year old box of 357 Magnum ammo...uncommon and a neat accessory. I do the same thing with vintage Weatherby boxes to go with my German Weatherby rifles (the fox box, the deer box, black bear box, tiger box, and elephant box- all discontinued in the late-1960s).

The 222 Remington Special box is another one that I'm after (prototype ammo of what would become 5.56mm).

Mike- thanks for the heads up, I'll check that ammo out although I shudder at the reserve price.

$300 should get you a decent prewar box of Remington or Western ammo. Remington, Winchester, Western and US Cartridge Company all produced it. US Cart. Co. is probably the most expensive, followed by Winchester. Early .357 Magnum ammo is expensive because it wasn't introduced until 1935 and commercial production was halted during the war. That's a relatively narrow window and the guns that chambered it (Registered Mag, Colt Shooting Master) were expensive and relatively scarce.

Some of the early postwar boxes were very similar to prewar boxes and should be considerably cheaper. Keep your eyes open at gun shows, it does turn up from time to time.

This is a box of prewar Western ammo. Postwar boxes were virtually identical, with the addition of "Division of Olin Industries" in the fine print on the back.
