Firstly we want to inform all that the photos and the research for this outstanding Triple Lock was done by the former owner and member of this Forum. We wish to thank him for his agreeing to our using what is shown.
This Triple Lock belonged to Captain Chester D. Allen of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. An interesting line in Allen's letter to Smith & Wesson is " I consider this the best life insurance I ever invested in".
It was shipped June 1910 to William H.Hogee & Co Los Angeles with a 6.5" barrel. It was returned to the factory in 1931 for repairs and a re-blue. It is possible that this is when the 4" barrel, with serial number stamped in the ejector shroud, was installed. However the archives show no evidence of that.
There are markings on the gun including a star on the butt, diamond on the grip frame and a B under the extractor. There is no date stamp on the grip frame.
