There is a good thread by Xfuzz about old 45 ball ammo and I thought I would show these relics. Survival ammo for air crews in WW II I suppose. I have to wonder if it would cycle in the 1911A1 because I've never shot any of them. Lot numbers are all pretty close on the boxes I have, 5012 thru 5040.

Those are some collectables.

The 45 shot shells that I make from 308 rifle brass function in my 45s reliably without any jams. I have no idea if the old GI shot loads will function a 1911A1.

I have an unopened box of the same ammo....anyone know of a .45acp WW2 ammo collector?

Randy

I know they would function in a .45 ACP revolver with moon clips! NICE indeed!

I am certainly no collector but depending on the price I would love a box as a broke old vet. PM me.:)

I am not in a position where I would sell the ones I have. They go well with my two Remington Rands, one of which, I know did duty in Korea and the RVN (arsenal rebuilt at Springfield Armory) carried by a helicopter pilot. I should run a few of these shot shells through that pistol just to see how it does.

I've got a 10 pack of 45 acp shotshells made by CCI. Don't know if they still make them, and I've never tried shooting one.

My uncle was a Hump pilot. He said they made their own for jungle game if downed, and not hitting a mountain.
Pull the bullet from a .45 ACP, add some shot, top with 00 and crimp.
He never used it, so whether it worked or not is a question.
In the pic he is on the left.
Not shown is their jeep with a mounted .50

I shot some of these years ago and remember they cycled the action ok. The best 45 shotshells I've used were the Remington crimped rounds almost like shooting ball ammo. Not made for years though

I tried a few many years ago. They will NOT function in a 1911. As an aside about them and WWII weapons...the 1928 Thompson was also issued a short magazine (about the same size as a 20rd stick) that was marked "SHOT" and was made specifically to shoot those shotshells. The Thompson wouldn't function with shotshells either.

The current variety of Shotshells made by CCI wouldn't function a 1911 either by the way. But homemade shotshells made from 7.62 Nato/308 cases can be loaded to fully function a 1911 but only if the ejection port is enlarged over the very tight 1911A1 military ejection port. It requires a lighter shot charge than maximum and an increased powder charge but it is easy to do.
