I'm in the process of documenting my Dad's military "career" and need some assistance. Like most WWII veterans, he "did his duty", got out, and returned home and got on with his life. He didn't talk much about his time in the service.

I have some of his stuff from back then - and a bunch of old pictures. Most of the pictures are "front-left" showing his left shoulder. But I found this picture showing his right shoulder.

I've been all over the internet many times and have been unable to locate the one patch below.

Here's some of what I know:

1) He served from 12/41 to 10/45

2( He was assigned to the 3rd Army Air Corps, 692nd Signal Aircraft Warning Reporting Company

3) He was a radar operator in the Ascension Islands

Here's the mystery patch on his left shoulder. He was wearing his "Good Conduct" and "Campaign" ribbons, so the picture must have been taken shortly before or after his discharge.

Anyone ever seen this patch or know where to find it?

Yup, those B-17 guys were flying targets among everyone else. The picture was France 1945
They took their life in their hands just getting into one of those planes
SKEEZIX, sorry about drifting your thread, but everytime one of these threads pop up i can't resist

More thread drift: From what I've read, the B-24 guys had some even worse "picnics," what with the weakness of the wings near the top of the fuselage. And they were a lot harder to fly well.

An acquaintance of mine flew B-17's and he said they called the B-24's the "Magic Carpet" because, flying lower due to the Davis wing, they would absorb all the flak.
