Looking for opinions/experience on installing an XS front sight on a Model 642-2. Thanks in advance.

I want one on my 640 and my 638. There was a thread about it recently too, so scroll through the last few day's threads. Of course the XS requires the original integral front sight be machined and modified in some way to accept an XS big dot front. I think someone said that XS would do the install for like $50 with the sight purchase. Not a bad deal, IMO. I may do it in the future.

Thanks for the reply Imaposer - I'm surprised that only one member has replied. I'll take a look for the thread you mentioned.

As to mounting the sight, I have one of their front sights on my Remington 870 and all it required was using JB Weld to mount the sight over the existing bead. Was hoping someone here would share their experience with this sight...

Alnamvet68,

No insult or offense intended, but since those are obviously not XS Sights your pictures don't seem relevant to the question at hand.

I never take offense, especially when I can say that my posted pictures do show a front XS sight. If the rear sight troubles you, pretend it's not there, otherwise I'll let the OP determine its relevance. :)

Well, I can't share my experience with the big dot on a J frame since I don't have one. But, I want one because I DO have one on my G27, and like it a great deal. Very quick to pick up and a very fast sight for ranges typically faced in defensive shooting. It's not a high precision sight, but for the purposes that a J frame excels, I think it's perfect.

The J frame XS sight, not counting the pined on one pictured above, but the ones with the integral front sight, from what I understand, require the factory sight to be milled down into a post that allows the xs bd to be pinned over it. Never seen one though, so perhaps it's just epoxied over the post once the sight is reshaped. I'd like to hear from someone that has one, and see one myself.

I e-mailed XS about the installation for my 442 Pro Moon Clip a while back. Non-Pinned Front Sight.

The front sight is milled down to form a Square Post like the front sight post on a Ruger LCR. The XS front sight is then Glued on with I believe Red LocTite.

Any good Gunsmith with a Milling Machine should be able to do the installation for you.

...my posted pictures do show a front XS sight.

That front sight does not show the rounded profile of the Standard Dot or Big Dot front sights offered for handguns, which is why I didn't recognize it as an XS offering. Could you please advise what model front sight it is and tell us a little more about how the instillation was done?

Agreed. Doesn't look the XS tritium Big Dot front sight I'm talking about - Two of the posted pics are just plain sights without tritium inserts.

With that said, really nice pistola just the same...

Thanks for that clarification. Hmmm... I wish it was set-up for the front sight to be milled down into a post and then drilled to allow the BD to be pinned on. I've read of too many BD's, that were epoxied over shotgun beads, coming off. I'd trust a pinned on sight a bit more I believe. Especially on a gun with sharp recoil like the light weight J frames.

I am going to order one for my 342 Airlite Ti through Brownells. The 342 has a pinned in ramp. My 686 had a simular sight and I replaced it years ago with a different sight and it was pretty to do. Just drift out the pin, put the new sight tenon in the moriltice, drill through the tenon ( IIRC with a .062 drill), replace the pin and your new sight is installed.

This is the XS regular dot on my 640:
