I have a 642 and would like to add the XS Big Dot sight to it. The XS's website says that "gunsmithing is required" but doen't mention what needs to be done. Has anyone done this to their 642 or 442 and what did it entail? Pics and review would also be appreciated.:)

Thank you.

The sight on your gun will need milled down to a post. This post will fit up inside the new xs sight. You can get the measurements of the post from xs sights.

I have the sight but haven't started the projects yet.

Your front sight is integral to the barrel, not pinned in place as on some other J frames such as the 340 or 342. Pinned sights are easier to change.

I was in same spot as you

& wasn't having luck finding a local smith I felt comfortable with.

I came across a LNIB M&P 340 and that solved my problem. :D

For the price of the sight, the cost of smithing & shipping, I was further ahead to buy the M&P 340.

I have to agree with Laddy Smith... at the time I was looking to have a XS Big Dot put onto my S&W 640 (no dash) I was told that it would be cheaper to buy a handgun with one already installed.

I found that I was able to buy a 640-1 and have the Big Dot installed for slightly more that it would have cost to have my 640 (no dash) milled and the Big Dot installed.
