I have reloaded cast and plated bullets for the last year.

Yesterday I picked up 38 & 45 cal. Hornady HP/XTP in 158 gr.

My Lee manual has specific XTP load data, however not many powders listed. Can I use 158 gr. Jacketed load data for these bullets. Thanks in advance for your help.

The XTP's are very good bulets, both for hunting and target shooting since they are generaly very accurate bullets. If you start well below maximum loads, and work up, you should have no problem using load data for "general" jacketed bullet listed type loads.

You can find a lot of loads on the Hodgdon website-

Gun 4 Fun, Thanks for the reply, I was hoping that was the case.

The website you posted is very helpful, I have alot of the powders listed there.

Thanks again.

If you are going to use them for target punching, it could get a little expensive. There are other jacketed bullets that are cheaper. Remington and Winchester have bulk bullets that work well. Nothing wrong with the XTP either, good bullets one and all. We have done several tests with them for expansion though. Nothing too scientific. It just takes more velocity to get them to expand than normal handgun velocitites. Going less than 900fps, they don't open up too good. Over that they are awesome! You didn't mention what the 45 caliber one weighed or what you are shooting them out of. Some semi-autos aren't too fond of them, others eat them like crazy.
The jacketing on an XTP is thicker and the bearing surface longer than most jacketed bullets and the caution to start low and work up is a good one. Enjoy, they are good, outstanding bullets.

I have also found that the XTP line does not expand very well. A nice solution is the Sierra JHP or in the .357 any semi jacket HP should work better than the XTP. They are accurate though and usually a little less cost than the Sierra's so for paper hole punching they should be more than enough.

Tell, the 45's are 200 gr. holow point.

I will be shooting them out of a Springfield Armory 1911A1. I have had no issues with 200 gr. LSWC and I hope i can get these to feed as well.

I loaded a few 357 mag. today with the XTP with 14gr. of 2400. I shot them out of a rifle to start with and they seem like a winner.

The ground hogs should be out soon and we'll see how that works out.

Thanks for the advice on the bulk bullets.

Best to you!

Yeah, can't wait for the groundhogs to come out here either!
I've got a Marlin 357 rifle that is just waiting to be unleashed on them! Same bullet too! Accurate @ 100 yards and should be devastating. I don't use, but I have with lead bullets, 2400 in the rifle. I can get better velocity with that new powder from Hodgdon, Lil' Gun. Folks warn against it in revolvers though. The rifle loves it! I get over 2000fps from my loads! That ought to take a groundhog out, dontcha think?
Be sure to post some pictures of you groundhog before you put it in the cook pot! ;)
