This is the best response I've got on loading Xtreme 165 grain 9mm RN bullets to max pressure and velocity. I'm conducting an experiment and it would be helpful to have a max load.

I asked Xtreme for data on Unique, Acc #7 and Power Point if possible. I've been turned down by the powder manufacturers who simply said that they don't test that combination. XXreme sent me this:

==========

Here is the information that our Technical and Ballistics team sent over for you:

Using SB620, which is close to Unique and Power Pistol on the burn rate sheet we load the 9-165 rn at 3.3 grains and achieve 800 fps velocity, with a pressure of 30,588 psi.

=======

I'm really grateful for their help, but turning this into something I can use is going to be a real trick. I looked up SB260 and it's made by Milan Balovejek - Newmenska, Lucani, whoever the heck that is? Turns out it's Yugosloavia and I've never heard of it.

I guess this is a start and I can work up some cartridges using the chronograph. Man, why didn't they use some powders used a lot here in the US????

That is absolutely rediculous. I use hodgdon because the plethora of immediately accessible data makes it easy to use. All be it 165gr is an odd ball, if you intend to sell it, make it easy for the market to use it. Suggesting 3.3gr of unobtanium is just silly.

So did you give up on the 158gr bullets and now starting a new adventure
with the heavier 165gr bullets?

Good luck with those "Xtra-Long" bullets and getting powder to fit
into the short 9mm case.

One brand does not seem that much but I found out that it was night & day
between the length of the Speer and Berry 147gr plated bullets.
So much that only "Ball powder" worked with the .67" long Berry RN bullet.

BE-86 or HS-6 might work?
Never tried Allian's sport powder, that is on the new data.
Good luck.

Thanks for posting that! Believe it or not I actually have a pound of SB620 - acquired very cheaply during the powder shortage.

I haven't been able to find ANY load data for it. I think I'll ask Xtreme if they have any others....

Why on earth??

Why on earth didn't they test it with some AVAILABLE powder?:confused:

No, but.....

Not exactly, I'm scratching for data anywhere I can find it. It may be worth picking up some Sport Powder. And you right. My first batch of bullets was a dimensional failure on many levels.:confused:

I had to take a siesta for bypass surgery and I'm having a bit of a time getting restarted. I have several problems to surmount, but everything depends on getting good load data.

I'd be interested to see how your particular gun handles such a heavy bullet. Many of my 9mm guns like their 147 gr bullets but a few don't (due to rifling twist I suspect) . Keep us posted.

I think I can answer that one.

Xtreme and Freedom Munitions are sister companies. Most Freedom Munitions ammo is loaded with Xtreme plated bullets. I'll bet SB-620 is what they actually use (or at least WERE using) to load Freedom Munitions using Xtreme plated bullets.

I'm making an educated guess on that one, but based on the fact that the guy I got my pound of SB-620 from is an employee of Freedom Munitions, I'd say it is probably a safe bet.

I've done some fairly heavy loads...

I've shot some out of my Kel Tec P 11 (no great loss if I damage it, not that I WANT to) and gotten around 850 (going by memory) Whatever it was, it was about equal to a .38 special shooting the same bullet. I really think that the 9mm should have the capability to top that.

You are on the right track with the Acc #7 powder for the 165 9mm bullet.

Starting with the fastest powder Bullseye around 745fps can be worked up to.
Titegroup does 767 but has an Est. PSI of .......... 35,910**
N320 might not work the action in your pistol and if you go to
Power Pistol, you are at 99% of 9mm PSI with around 851fps.

Acc #7 can get up to 894fps and be well under 35,000 PSI and
not hammer you or your weapon...........
if the bullet will work in your pistol.
This is a BIG mess of things to put into the little 9mm case and
have a green light on fit and safety.

Here is hoping things work out.
PS;
you can stop here...........
because they don't make any BIGGER bullets yet. :D

I don't know if anybody else has any SB-620 powder they want to try to use, but I got a couple of more 9mm recipes from Xtreme - for 115gr and 124gr bullets.

They haven't answered the question about other calibers yet (like 380acp, 45acp, 38 special, 44 special, etc.) but I'm hoping they have some data for at least a couple of those too.

Anyone interested in their response, just send me an email...

I'd just start with a low to midrange load for a 147gr jacked bullet and work upward from there.

It is interesting to hear that FM likely uses a completely obscure powder, though.

FM is in the business of making $$$$$.

If I could get a box car full of powder that works, on the cheap
I would not shut the door if it did not come from the USA.

Lots of todays powders will still do the job and most have data......
even though some if new take a while.
