Good afternoon
I would have to go with the 629 with the 4". As a handloader & caster I could load round ball for bunnies and a 260 grain + for serious hunting. If I had to live "Off the Shelf" of stores I think I would be able to scrounge enough ammo to stay viable. Plus if I just have a mold I can use any other large primer cartrige to get componets and again reload my own with just a sharpened nail and a hammer of any type.
Sadly the model 57 was not included to pick from.

I think the answer depends on your proportion of "bedside" vs. "concealed carry". Any of the 3-5" barreled guns in 9 mm/.357-.45 will do if you don't carry them a lot, and with a proper holster the same would apply down to the 2" up to 5" barrels. Packing that 4" 629 sure would be interesting though.

But one gun, for everything from "bump in the night" to long-term carry? The Sig 228R with any proven 115-124 gr HP (Federal 9BP, Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel, etc., etc.) and a good light for the rail. Night sights and CT Lasergrips too? That should handle just about anything.

So are you going to tell us what this is about? are they guns you own that you need to put all others away or sell?

Or are ya so new to guns that ya think that list represents a complete list of desirable guns for the uses you describe?

half your results are skewed because folk did not read or comrehend the uses for the gun you asked to choose.

For many the difference between a bedside/CC piece is different than a "one handgun" which is what I believe many were choosing.


Not that any of this matters in real life but I am curious as well as some others must be.

For me, a "one gun" situation is what I normally look at when questions like this are posed.
The 4" .44 is AMAZINGLY capable. Load it with strong specials or short barrel magnum loads and it is a pussycat with with cobra fangs.
The reliability of the S&W revolver with instant second strike capability in case of an ammo malfunction.
You are in an enclosed area and more than likely wont have earplugs in... so the lighter rounds will have less flash and blast, but still be VERY effective.
Plus I can carry it for SD and hunt with it.
