How's a 3rd gen noob supposed to keep up anyhow?? I had to go buy a 3rd edition SCSW just so I could keep it on the side table for reference when reading these threads.
Admit it. I bet some of you do too. :D

I believe that Rube Goldberg rests peacefully in his grave whenever the subject of S&W's numbering system comes up.

It has a bit of logic to it at it's core, but then they go ahead and just do WHATEVER on occasion as they see fit.

I'm only interested in S&W handguns which have no more than 2 digits in their model numbers. I only have two with three digits (629 and 659) and none with four digits.

I was give as a gift, a book entitled, "The Complete Encyclopedia of Pistols and Revolvers" by A. E. Hartink. It is an excellent reference on all modern handguns of the world. In the S&W section, they have listed all of the different variations with a description and a picture. Sure is big help for me. Is number is ISBN 0-7858-1519-8.

Amazon has them for sale, starting at $0.01 plus shipping. Just use ISBN number to search.

Great way to get a good reference book.

Many thanks for that chart. Too many model for me to memorize. Can see where collectors can invest a small fortune acquiring them all.
