You have $800 to spend and no S&W revolver yet but want one...what do you get?

686, any length. I must be the luckiest man alive,20 to 25 new Smiths in the last 3 years and never a problem. Most of them more accurate the my oolder ones

I cast another vote for the Model 29 or 629.
You have a .357 but no .44
You would not regret spending that dough on a 29.

HAHAHA!!!! Funny. I so strongly disagree. But this is clearly a YMMV matter.

If you want an N frame for your 800 or so dollars and not a .357 then I'd say search for a Model 25, preferably in .45 Colt but .45 ACP will do.

.45 Colt reigns over the .44 Magnum IMHO, and I know that's gonna stir up a firestorm.

REBUKE TIME!
#1 several people on here recommended a short barrel 44 mag & just because it differs from your opinion, its not a dumb idea.
#2 There are hundreds of thousands of short barrel 44 mag from various manufactures in the market place.
#3 concealed carry is not a fad, but a reality for most of us.
Anyone who knows anything about CCW realizes that there isn't a huge difference in CCW a snub, or a 4 in barrel. Its the size of the cylinder that matters most. I would never call a Ruger Redhawk short barrel a CCW sized gun.

Lighten up Francis.

There is a nice Mdl 27 with 3 1/2" barrel on this site for sale. That would be my choice. Also the OP would still have enough money for quality leather to go with it.

Dude, you called those of us who like short barrel 44 mags dumb

That is not what I said.

Nevertheless, I apologize to you and anyone else who felt insulted. Short barreled .44s are fine. If I were limited to one .44, I wouldn't want a sub-4 inch; too inefficient for me. If I had several already, I wouldn't feel bad about adding one to my collection.

I think he said the idea of a short barrel .44 magnum was dumb. Not the person who owned it. You could read that into it if you want but obviously that was not his intention as evidenced by his apology.....it's all good.

Used get a model 19 in the finish and barrel length of your choice(can't go wrong with a 2 1/2" in blue or nickel). New I'd proabley go for a 686+ although I'm not sure if that comes in under $800.

Though I recommended a 4 inch 586, I have to agree with you on the
.45 Colt as well. I have a 25-5 and love the caliber but it is a 6 inch barrel so it was not my first choice. Don't get me wrong I like the 44 mag and have a 29-2 in 6 inch and with full mag loads it is just a bit much for me so a shorter barrel in 44 mag was not on my list to recommend. Then there is the .44 special in 3 inch but for me the frame is just a bit bigger than the 586 and that is why I shied away from that as a recommendation.....but then again I have a couple of those. Call me fickle......but I stick with a 586 4 inch. Okay now the gratuitous pictures.

So many good choices. Confusing?

S&W M28 357 6" barrel blue
S&W M27 357 6" barrel nickel
S&W M57 41. 6" barrel blue or nickel
S&W M29 44. 6 1/2" barrel blue (dirty Harry)

For me I'd go for the nickel finish since its being phased out lately. Blue is the next finish to be phased out. In the near future everything will be in stainless or epoxy painted.

I would pick up my Aunt take her to the nearest S&W gun dealer and tell her "Auntie I have $800 in my pocket go through the store if you find a S&W Revolver that you like in that price range and I will pay for it."

I already have a lots of S&W Revolvers of my own she only has two.

You have a 66 so the idea of getting a 19 next is a bit lost on me.

If it were me I'd go smaller, caliber-wise, and my first choice would be a K22 Combat Masterpiece (pre-model 18).

If you want to continue your ss theme then look for a 617, 6-shooter (either a no dash or a -1); it could take some searching for a nice one within your budget, but it's not impossible (might have to settle for a 6" barrel, though). I suppose you could go for a 617, 10-shooter, but get one w/o the IL.

Then -- since you said you want to "... expand my S&W collection...." -- next time the itch strikes look for an N-frame in .44 or .45.

And then... go for a blue I-frame, flat latch (.22, .32, or .38) since one of your goals could be to just look at it. For me there's no finer Smith revolver to "just look at" than a really pretty, old, small frame (ok, maybe a really clean WWII Victory Model would be about equal).

Consider this, though: decide a few models that you might be interested in and look for them simultaneously. You never know when a good deal is going to come along, and it would be a shame to miss it 'cause you're looking in the wrong direction based on some predetermined order. This method demands a bit of patience so you'll have to quell that fire burning in your pocket.

Best of luck in your search,

Bob
