Iggy, I bought my model 94 the same time you did, for the same amount!
If we could back in time and know what we know now, we all would be rich.
I have zero talents, I never have been exceptional at anything. However it seems that every gun and car that turned me on from the late 40s up through the late 50s when I was growing up, became a sought after classic! If a guy had a good old safe, weather proof barn and bought old cars, pickups and guns he would have the finest ira or 401k in the world today! Not only that, but it would be tax free if you kept a low profile! I remember wanting to buy a beautifull 40 ford coup for $200s, I once started to buy a beautifull 56 t-brid with both tops for $1,200s! My dad talked me out of it, asking where I was going to haul my stuff as I was liveing on the road back then. I remember a tip top shape model A coup I was going to buy for $200s, but no way to get it to wisconsin from louisanna, as I had a company truck that I was towing my car with. I think the biggest deal I passed on was about a late 1930s or 40s mercedes coup in west virginnia for $800s. The only other one I seen was a picture in playboy advertisement for a sound system they had put in arlo gutherys car that looked identical.
I called them all right years ago, but today I dont see one car out there that I get the same feeling about!

S&W M/36 3"HB $110.00 in 1976, M/29-2 6 1/2" Blue $240.00. The 29 was really hard to find as the Dirty Harry movie had just come out the year before, you took what you could find and were glad to get it. Every dealer at the gun show had Highway Patrolmen N.I.B. on their table for $150.00 and could not give them away, they were S&W's red headed step child at the time.

I paid $ 153 for a model 60 no dash and $ 302.00 for a nickle 29-2. I didn't have any money then; the total of those two guns was two weeks pay (at that time), and I had to save for months to get them. Still have both, by the way. Bill

I don't buy new guns, but I can buy good used S&Ws now much easier than I could back in those days. I bet that in 1970 an average school teacher in Georgia didn't bring home $375 per month after taxes. And a new Model 15 was $97? No way a teacher could afford one. Even a used one at $50 would have been a luxury.

Yep. As a first-year high school English teacher in 1970, my annual salary (before taxes) was $5,800. I purchased my first Smith revolver that year, too, an ANIB Model 48 in 8 3/8, for $97 with a tooled leather holster and belt.

2 Colt Match Targets @ $135.00 each. That was a fortune in 1973. Wish I had forgone the SS Chevelle and bought all I could at the time. I do have one still NIB.

1970 with a top Federal LEO agency, salary was $8000 per year. Don't go very far!

Prices will always differ from state to state but when I lived in NC, I bought a Series 70 MkIV 45 Auto for $159.95 in late 1973.

That same year I bought a Ruger 45 ACP/45 Colt (interchangeable cylinders) with 4 5/8" barrel, Serial number 00075(I think) for $79.00..the old 3-screw Ruger you pay a mint for today.

Pretty sure you could find it for 20 cents if you shopped. Gas shortage was a couple of years down the road.
