Must be one of those "you had to be there" things...
The sign is surely correct. There WAS a documented case in early 1926, none since, but there was later proof that the individual involved had been deaf since birth, and probably before.
The real question is why that sign was posted in that place at that time. Had there been there a recent rash of irrational advice?

I guess it depends on how uptight you are and how convincing the reasons are to calm down.

I don't know if this is universally applicable or not, but it damn sure applied to two of my wives.
I recall from my childhood memories that when told to calm down it was best to do so quickly or get a swat to the backside and hauled off to a place, not to my liking.
