Looks like Putin will be spending 41% of his country's entire budget on war next year. So sad. We spend 13.3% of ours. :)

"The Russian government plans to spend 17 trillion rubles ($183 billion) on national security and defense in 2025 — about 41 percent of its annual expenditures." Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, September 30, 2024 | Institute for the Study of War

Here's our 13.3% - How much does the US spend on the military? - USAFacts

For those of you who weren't around, this is pretty close to what Reagan did to break the Soviet Union - make their military budget burden unbearable.

After what the world experienced in the 1930s and 1940s, you would think we would have learned the lesson that trying to appease aggressors never works.

This isn't hard to understand: In February of 2022, a United Nations member invaded another United Nations member, without just cause or provocation, and with no formal declaration of war. That cannot be permitted, for doing so will empower any dictator, anywhere, to invade a neighbor with impunity.

Ukraine must win this war...and if the United States stands for anything at all, we must support her.

One of my favourite quotes, " the only thing that mankind has learned from the study of history is that mankind has learned nothing from the study of history". I'm an old guy, a Ukrainian Canadian, ex military, and lifelong student of history. I see so many parallels with the onset of WWII and Putin's reckless military adventurism. I understand fully the desire not to get involved. Having friends and family directly impacted by this war, I don't have the luxury of indifference. I try to wake people up and show them the potential consequences of isolationism, but mostly I'm heartsick that the morality of my generation that would never allow fascism to prevail seems to either have been severely diluted or absent altogether in some people.

Yup, I remember. And with the Saudis recent announcement that they will ramp up oil production, putin will have a harder time paying for his aggression with less of the only thing he has...oil revenue.

Uncle Sam did not share my delusions of adequacy for service, so I never did. I did my public service as a reserve cop for many years. Not the same and I don't claim it.

I do belong to some other groups elsewhere that have a lot of military vets, some number from tip of the spear units in Infantry and SOCOM. I can't think of any of them who liked war or think it is a good thing. They have some pretty strong views on the stupidity of it ... but they also recognize that there are times when such is a necessary evil. I must defer to their judgment.

Unless I'm "mis" or "dis"-informed, I believe it's around 13% of the total budget, and growing. I believe the number you're using is the % of the GDP.

Nope, the 2.07% was the interest rate - my mistake. Debt service cost is 6.8% of the budget.

"Servicing the debt is one of the federal government’s biggest expenses. Net interest payments on the debt are estimated to total $395.5 billion this fiscal year, or 6.8% of all federal outlays, according to the Office of Management and Budget." 5 facts about the U.S. national debt | Pew Research Center

Bet Russia's cranky about the interest of their $300 billion in cSh reserves frozen in the West. We collectively have been sending the interest on these as weapons and other stuff to Ukraine. Just 68% of the amount of Russia's 2025 budget making money for UkrIne. :) reuters.com

2025 budget projections.

President Biden's 2025 Budget Builds On Our Historic Progress, House Republicans' 2025 Budget Takes Us Backward | House Budget Committee Democrats.

$7,300,000,000,000 in spending.

$5,500,000,000,000 in receipts.

$1,700,000,000,000 deficit

Interest payments on the national debt projected to be a mere $1,000,000,000,000

Your link is from Feb of '23. Interest compounds.

Will Ukraine run out of Ukrainians before Russia runs out of Russians?
