I had a good friend who became a song writer in Nashville. He never made it to the big time, but he did rub shoulders with some
of the big stars of the time. He called me one time and told me one of the big stars was going to do an album of the old favorites.
He knew how much I like country music so he asked me think on it for a while and then send him a list of perhaps half-dozen of my all time favorites. Here they are in no particular order. I'd like
to know yours. Be careful though. You will be telling your age.
For the good times by Ray Price
Make the world go away by Eddy Arnold
He'll have to go by Jim Reeves
Crazy by Patsy Cline
You don't know me by Ray Charles
Help me make it through the night by Kris Kristofferson
I can't stop loving you by Ray Charles

A few of my favorites, in no particular order:

The Ballad of Poncho and Lefty (Willie and Merle's version)
I've Been Everywhere, Hank Snow
Harper Valley PTA, Jeannie C. Riley
Act Naturally, Buck Owens
Thank God and Greyhound, Roy Clark
Long Haired Redneck, David Allen Coe
Mr. Shorty, Marty Robbins
I'll Never Smoke Weed with Willie Again, Toby Keith and Scott Emerick
In the Summertime, Roger Miller

I could continue, but I won't. I'll just say I really don't care much for today's "country music". And yes, those quotation marks are on purpose!

I like "traditional" country music, but I favor the country-rock stuff of my misguided teens. I just have the studio (album versions) here. I much prefer live versions and especially covers of these songs.

Did we get a Waylon song?
Once upon a time we went to see Willie who was in a lounge in downtown Vegas.
I was a little embarrassed when they introduced Chill Wills and we had better seats than he did.
About 11:45 The waitress cane around and said 'Don't leave! Waylon will be here for the midnight show.'
When the curtains, he was there!
Yes it was a great show.

"Thank God and Greyhound", Roy Clark

There I was--in a little diner. For some unknown reason I slipped a coin in the jukebox and played that song. I'd never heard it before. It was a low time in my life, for the usual reason. Then I started laughing. A guy down the way on another stool just grinned at me. He knew exactly what I was thinking!

Now--every time I hear it it just plumb tickles me!

More proof that God has a sense of humor.

The Cowboy Song by Garth Brooks

Oddly enough the only videos I can find online are covers that don't really justice to the original.
