We have a number of national parks nearby - Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain, etc. - and they're spectacular, but the area we really enjoy is the Blue Ridge country of western and southern Virginia. Love the scenery, the greenery, and the wineries!
Starved Rock State Park near Utica IL. The trails are great and there are several small water falls. Illinois RailRoad Museum near Union IL , certain days you can ride on some of the trains.
I have been in 40 some of the 48 States and enjoyed all of them, had great times and glad I took the trips but the best looking thing I saw on all of my trips was my house when I got back home. Larry

I'm still looking for my favorite place. In the meantime, I'll take the hammock in the back yard or a blanket on the grass anywhere peaceful.

Oklahoma is home but I've lived in the Seattle area off and on over the past 20 years. For my money one of the most scenic areas is the Columbia River, from Portland east. Here's a webcam that I look at almost daily: Columbia River Gorge Real Time Images

Been and lived in a lot of places but it is to my place in north Idaho that tops the list. Hope to retire in the next year or so and spend a lot of time there.

That's where I grew up and then worked for 20 years. Good choice!

We have a son in Idaho and visit him often. Using his place as home base we have gone North to Glacier/Waterton, East to Yellowstone/Tetons/Cody, South to Utah and Nevada (even to the Grand Canyon), and West to Lake Tahoe/Yosemite/Redwood and the California/Oregon Coast. All of these places are spectacular. He was very thoughtful in choosing a place to settle down. We love it.

My good friend Milt wanted his ashes spread in the Pecos wilderness area.
And that's exactly what he got. We just had a little DD 214 discussion in another thread. We had Milt's DD 214 handy but he didn't want to be buried in the Santa Fe cemetery.
He wanted to go to the Pecos and that's exactly what he got.

Been a few years since I was there myself. I was on the island for a couple of weeks putting a roof on for a friend. Beautiful island. Driving around the south end beach was almost New England-ish. Sailed out there a few years back too on a race from Little Traverse Bay. Between the two trips I think I've seen everything there was to see on it but they're the kind of things you don't mind seeing twice. Did you fly over or take the ferry?
