I believe you are describing Hornady ammunition. Found at: Ammunition - Hornady Manufacturing, Inc

If you prefer green plastic in your hollow points, they also have Zombie Max.
I am assuming vampire ammo will be blue?

when I first saw this post I was hoping to find someone who has some old ammo like I have.
I was given a box of old ammo years back and in going thru it I found several .44 special HP's with a small pistol primer in the end and a red lacquer covering. Been a bit leery of prying the primer out, not sure what could be underneath it.
Anyone have a clue about this?

It could be a Bingham Ltd "Exploder" or possibly a product from Velet or Velex exploder type load.

With some research, I found this photo.
The accompanying text stated that while they generally detonated against a hard surface, in soft material they didn't.
From everything I've ever read about stuffing objects in the tip of a hollow point, "that trick never works".

Alan, you do some research! I recall that the .22LR ammo Mark Chapman (was that his name?) used to shoot President Reagan was also some exotic type of 'exploder' ammunition that did not explode.
Would not care to use such ammunition: the 'hug-a-thug' crowd would have a field day trumpeting that the citizen was intent on causing the BG 'unnecessary pain and suffering.'

I have had good success using Hornady "plastic red tip" hunting bullets in muzzleloaders and center-fire rifles. I have recovered the plastic tip and well expanded mushroomed bullets inside harvested game animals.

The red ball is supposed to keep the HP from filling up and limiting expansion but is designed to push the petals open.

"Exploder" ammo. I tried some in a .357 once. Interesting results on a metal 55 gallon drum.

If memory serves Mark David Chapman was the psycho who killed John Lennon. John Hinckley attempted to assassinate President Reagan. - Jp

I think John Hinkley used some sort of exploding .22 when he shot President Reagan.
Oh I see that's been brought up already. Anyway, does anyone know anything for sure about it? I do remember hearing on the news that some didn't explode. Probably did if they hit a hard surface. I just looked up some of it and it says the bullet that hit Reagan had bounced off the limo.
Update. It was .22 Devastators and the only one that exploded hit Brady. Hinkley fired 6 shots in rapid succession but didn't hit Reagan (except for the ricochet)
The bottom line is that Reagan was very lucky that Hinkley was a really awful shot.
The first hit was on Brady, the second hit a D.C. LEO in the neck, the third shot missed, the fourth hit the special agent that covered Reagan with his body, the fifth hit the limo's bullet proof glass, the sixth bounced off the limo and hit Reagan.
The doctors on learning about the exploding bullets, volunteered and used bullet proof vests while taking the bullet out of the police officer's neck.
The hospital didn't keep a stretcher by the emergency entrance (DUH!) and Reagan had to walk in, where his knees buckled and he was dragged/carried to the ER.
