My son wants a new rifle but the price of ammo or finding it, has him standing back.

I saw one place on line that had 6.5 Hornady at 500 for $323
another had 200 for $190.
Never saw a 1,000 round rate, that might be lower.

Any "for real" ammo places out there that have rifle ammo in BULK at fair prices, in stock ?

What rifle for that round?
Would the old style Rem 700 or the Win model 70 be a good choice or are all the new & better rifles "Black" or plastic for this round?

Thanks for any help.

The pre 64 Winchester action is a far better action than the Remington 700. The best high quality Mauser style rifle available today is the Ruger Hawkeye. It’s just a slightly slimmed down 77MKII with a steel floor plate. It has the best scope mounting system available. There are many better actions than Remington’s push feed design with it’s flimsy little fingernail sized spring clip extractor and bolt handle just stuck to the bolt body with Silver brazing.

What is it with the 6.5 CM? It is essentially a 6.5 Swede Ballistically. I'm not a 308 fan but it is one of the best long range cartridges out there.

That seems like a pretty good deal. I pay more than that for just the the 6.5 empty brass. New Lapua brass is over a dollar a piece.

Also, is this rifle for hunting or target shooting? If paper, the 6.5 Creedmoor is a good cartridge with solid ballistics. It's plenty good for hunting too if he's after hogs or white tail, but maybe not your first choice for elk or moose.

I’m a real .308 fan for too many reasons to go into here. The 6.5 CM’s claim to fame is just that it’s the latest and greatest with the usual over hyped ballistics. Remember how the 7mm 08 was going to make the .308 obsolete? Didn’t happen. The .308 will be here long after the 6.5 CM is just a distant memory.

I see 6.5cm ammo going for $2.00, and up, per loaded round. Excellent price if loaded, quality ammo (these days, anyway). Before the latest shortage, I was paying $13 and change per box for the S&B 140 gr FMJ load - not anymore. EXCELLENT ammo, by the way, at least out of my Bergara rifle.

I am a big .308 fan, and own close to a dozen, but I do recognize there are certain advantages to the 6.5cm. Being a newer cartridge, you tend not to see the variation you find in some .308 chamber and barrels. A little less recoil as well. 140's stay supersonic out past 1000 yards, which contributes to the cartridges accuracy at extended ranges, which is what the round was designed for. In a nutshell, an efficient, mildly recoiling, long range round, that also makes for a nice deer sized game cartridge.

A 6.5 Swede, or 7mm/08 will do about the same, and I wouldn't sell a good rifle in either caliber to just replace it with a 6.5cm. Having a selection of choices is always a good thing.

What does he plan to do with it? For hunting, I'd stick with a .308 like many have said above, and go with a nice traditional hunting rifle platform. But, if he's into long range precision shooting, look hard at the Ruger Precision Rifle. 6.5CM 's strong point is shooting past 750-800 yards, below that it has no advantage over .308. If he wants a really cool rifle in .308, not really great for hunting because it is heavy, look at a M1A. makes a good bench gun, the Loaded and Match grades are very accurate.

If he wants a 6.5 cartridge that doesn't break the bank, and still has the legs for long range, look at a Grendel. Smaller case, shoots a slightly lighter bullet (CM generally goes 140 grain, Grendel goes to 123 grain), less recoil. My AR Grendel is good to 1100 yards.

And somebody mentioned 7mm-08. I haven't seen many around here in a while, but it is a damn good round. Shoots flatter and further than .308, but is limited in factory offerings (gun).

Are you sure that wasn't for BRASS?

Loaded 6.5CR ammo is running better than $2.50/rnd right now. That price would be about right for Hornady brass.

What cartridge depends on what you're doing.

He'll want a bolt action if accuracy is the goal. I'm shooting a Bergara Premium that has been fantastic out of the box. Nicer finished than any Rem 700 I've seen in quite a while, and lights out accurate.

Wow go ahead and tell us how you feel . After a 60 year reign on accuracy I guess I never realized the model 700 was so inferior.

I think Remington’s accuracy can be attributed to their barrels, not to the 700 action. Like the 700 or not it is a mediocre action design that pales in comparison to better designs with controlled feed, one piece receivers and bolts. The 700 push feed bolt with it’s flimsy extractor and stuck on handle is not field stripible let alone reparable. When the flimsy extractor breaks it can’t even go to a local gun shop but must be shipped to a Factory authorized repair shop that has the proper tooling required to fix it. Many folks are simply oblivious as to how their own guns actually function but not all are and that’s why you won’t see many 700s in Alaska or Africa where game may be dangerous.

Local Academy has Hornady “ Black” 6.5 Creedmoor for $30/ 20. Few years ago friend needed money and I bought his Ruger American in 6.5 Creedmoor. Have shot 30.06 since the 60’s, 308 since the 80’s and was Very Impressed with the 6.5 Creedmoor. Put a Boyds laminated wood stock on it and have to admit it shot better than anything at 400 yards. Gave it to my son and he loves it. Just a different calibre and yea its like the Sweed. Each to his own.

the .308 will last for years. my best shooter is the "browning lever action rifle".

I bought a Ruger Hawkeye in 6.5 Creedmoor the first year they were available. Very accurate, but heavy. The bolt is sloppy in the receiver and cycles roughly. I sent it back to Ruger but their fix didn’t improve anything. I like the hinged floor plate to the magazine. Recently I bought a Tikka T3x in 6.5C. It is just as accurate, lighter and cycles much smoother than the Ruger. It has a detachable box magazine which is compatible with my Tikka T3 in .243 Win. The composite stock looks cheap but does the job. I may change it out. Factory wood stock versions of this gun are catalogued, but I couldn’t find one.

As far as ammo, for me this is not a high volume shooter cartridge. I hand load 129 grain Hornady SST for practice and hunt with Hornady Superformance 129 SST.

I shoot and reload both 6.5cm and .308. The 6.5cm in my RPR is unbelievably accurate. My absolute best long range gun. Eggs at 300 yards with ease, 1000 yard 12" steel no problem. Far better ballistics then the .308, but I do love shooting the .308 in my POF Revolution DI too.

I started reloading the 6.5cm about 3 years ago taking into account different powder charges as well as bullet jump to ogive. When all the smoke cleared I had a great recipe. My last test target below at 100y with reloads. Still working on the .308 development. Both are enjoyable and don't have to worry about the ridiculous prices. I will give a nice shout out to Hornady, I was able to achieve with factory ammo .312" moa with 140g ELD match in the RPR. That was my goal on the reloads when I started. Ended up with .25" moa...baring that one hole where I twitched lol. Great cartridges, both of them, but I prefer the 6.5 for serious distance.

Be careful when looking for your ammo, so many scam sites out there now. I did some searching for you and the best I could find was around $1.70+/- per round and I think that was Norma. If your 500 for $323 is legit and being Hornady that's darn good in this day and age! Save that brass too!
