For those that have never carried or even owned or even shot a handgun I have some advise that will make the process go much easier at least in the State of Tennessee!
Before you try to take the training class in Tennessee you might want to do a little legal work to iron out the process in general and particularly if you have ever even been charged with any felony crime (those crimes that can put you in jail or prison for more than 11 months and 29 days)!
Also now it is against federal law as well if you have been convicted of the crime of "Domestic Violence" beating of your wife, girlfriend or children to even sell you a weapon this is one of the few misdemeanors that will keep you from legally owning a firearm in the first place nowadays so watch your temper!
Now suppose you go to a gun store and pick out a gun and then when they do the background check you are denied the purchase of the weapon you want, what can you do? Well you can appeal the decision of the background check and you will either be outright denied again or given a provisional permit to go ahead with the sale if the gun dealer is OK with that. If this happens to you then you have a felony charge or a "Domestic assault" charge against you, so what you need to do is clear this matter up! Well how do I clear that up you might ask?
If you ave been denied the sale of a weapon you need to do a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Background Checks with the TBI and this can be done online at the previous link for $29.00 this check will show all charges that need to be cleared up. Keep in mind that if you were charged with a felony and went to court and the case was dismissed, unless you had an attorney and he requested expungment of the charge that this charge will still be on the TBI and you will be denied but given a provisional option if you appeal the decision from TBI's TICS system.
I am sure there are more cases that require more work, but to clear your record in most cases it is free and you can do it yourself by going to the courthouse and asking for a letter of expungement and filling in the appropriate blanks!
There is another circumstance of you being indicted for a felony and you never actually go to trial and your attorney tells the prosecutor and judge that you, his client want to plead in the case and of course this forces all parties to a court date to hear the plea, and in this case your plea is NOT GUILTY but the DA says well "your honor we do not have enough evidence to try this case at this time" at which the judge retires the case this is not good for you as it happened to me, so 25 years later it is still showing up as an unresolved felony charge, so I hired an attorney and for $250.00 he goes before the judge in my behalf and asked for a dismissal of these 25 year old bogus charges and since there never was any evidence he dismisses the charges, then the lawyer has to wait until the judges dismissal comes down in writing and then he files for expungement of the charges which takes another 90 days but now there is no record of anything at all on my name and the same can happen if you encounter difficulties purchasing a firearm in Tennessee or want to get a permit.
There is Justice but it might take a little homework on your part and some research and possibly a little money! If you are having any problems with such matters please respond and I will help or lead you to someone who can help you!
