Best Weapon for Home Defense against Home Invasion?

Defense against a home invasion? To start ... the usual steps ... fence, locks, lights, bars on windows/doors, alarm on windows/doors. Next, short barreled semi-auto shotgun w/ extended magazine tube ... Benelli or HK. Preference would be high capacity 9mm pistol ... Sig P-226. Shotguns loaded with 2 3/4 inch copper plated lead No. 1 buckshot. This will give a extra round of capacity. Pistols loaded with Underwood Extreme Penetrator ammo. Maybe would include a good AR - 15 w/ 55 gr. FMJ's ... or a AK - 47. Probably ... no. Sincerely. bruce.

What are your thoughts for best weapons to defend against a home invasion?

Please consider lethal and non-lethal devices. Also, consider where you are living and your physical abilities.

During daytime hours, I like my EDC (S&W 3953) handy for that sudden surprise when the door is kicked in. I also like to have bear spray handy.

At night, I like my S&W Governor loaded with .410 00 and my 3953. I also use Master Lock security bars on the MBR doors to give me time to call the police, get my wife in to the MBA armed with a Walther PPS9, and grab my 2100 lumens mini flash light.

How about you?

Did not know that New Bern was getting that bad! Lived down the road in Havelock for 20 years off and on, never had a problem there.

A handgun of any sort to be able to get to this,,,,,,,,,,

Alarm maybe
Do you really have bars on your windows? I’m always amazed at how few houses have exterior lighting. Three out of four sides of my house is lit up. The forth side has no first floor doors or windows.

Speaking of weapons only, a handgun that is readily accessible from where ever you are in the home. In a true home invasion you have seconds to react. For some that means having the gun on them, others prefer to stage guns in close proximity to where they are likely to be.

A shotgun in the bedroom as a final line of defense is next.

You seem reluctant to take a life and that is a good thing as long as it doesn't get you or a loved one killed by your hesitancy. With that said, you DO NOT want to use the bear spray indoors! It's going to affect everyone, not just the bad guy(s). Save the bear spray (or any aerosol OC spray) for the outdoors.

I have a primary alarm system similar to what Sig220.45 has, times three!

They may not look like much but they alert to folks on the Highway 800 feet away. Their hearing is much better than Herself’s or mine.

The secondary alarm system is on the doors and windows.

The dogs are in the MBR with us and the door is closed. I will not go out to look for trouble, I much prefer to let it come to me.

If yours are anything like ours, the only thing an intruder would have to fear is being licked to death. 😂

Currently live in prasonage provided by the church. It has no bars.

In a few month, will retire. Will be living in a condo. Will have bars, etc. on front windows. Learned the value of bars on windows when my wife and I lived in a ground floor apartment in New Orleans. After two separate incidents of someone trying to gain entry through the bedroom windows, I took steps. Bars are much better than having to grab a shotgun.

We will also have lights, alarm. And ... one extra feature ... the "three musketeers," i.e., three attack cats with murder mitts loaded with meat hooks ... and always hungry. Otherwise, all other preparations are the same. Sincerely. bruce.

first line of defense is very good outdoor lighting, followed by ADT's best security system. plenty of weaponry if they break in, and i make at least one trip to the range weekly to stay familiar with my weapons. am fortunate to live in a area where home invasions are very rare.

(1)Electronic notification w/ cameras and voice comm.
(2) Dazzling array of motion activated LED floodlights.
(3) CZ P07 within arms reach unless out of bed when it's being worn.
(4) Mossberg 590 loaded with 00 and #4 buck alternating.

Doors are always weakest link even though they are steel clad. Neighborhood has several households I have shot with, cops get special rates here as renters customarily. About a dozen marked units parked on the street representing 4 different LE agencies. So far, so good. Joe

I think the OP referenced non lethal tactics just to hear what others do. Ex lights alarm dog etc. I don’t think he was asking us to consider non lethal as an alternative to a firearm.

Hmmm...to protect against a home invasion...in order...

1. A sensitive and loud alarm system...

2. A big, loud, loyal, and protective dog...

3. My S&W Governor...

4. My Mossberg 590...

Many good ideas listed here. I have a riot shotgun in bedroom, along with loaded revolvers in several rooms. Now from experience many years ago searching sampans in the Mekong Delta, guys would step on the boats with 1911 or AR 15 and they would keep doing whatever. When I stepped up with Ithaca riot gun everyone froze.

First and foremost, the home itself. I built my house right next to the town that has been proclaimed "The safest town in America" for many years running.

Nevertheless, crime is everywhere. So, Second on the list is an awesome security system. Mine is not only directed at burglars, but smoke, heat, CO and sump pump alarm detectors as well.

Third, a 12 gauge pump and a duty grade 9 mm in close access.
