Effective 12/5/11 the Kahr K9 is no longer authorized for carry by NYPD officers. The official teletype (FINEST message) that came out gave no reason why, just a bunch of jibberish about commanding officers ensuring compliance. Interestingly enough I had an interiew at the Firearms and Tactics Section the day after the order came down, but I never got the opportunity to ask anyone what was going on with the Kahr. They were swamped with p.o.'ed cops calling and demanding to know why their off duty gun is now a paper weight.

The K9 was taken off the off duty list in 2005, anyone who had one prior to that was grandfathered in. I know at some point in the past few years, maybe 3 years, there was a remediation program. I think it consisted of changing all the springs and very close inspections. I guess the range staff was not happy with the results of the program. If and when I get any more info I'll make an update.

Glad I got a 3914...

MTS,

I talked with Kahr at the NRA show back in April in Pittsburgh. I asked them if they were going to try and get the K9 reauthorized. They said they would love to but NYPD has such high trigger pull requirements they kept having issues with reliability somehow.
I'd say the Glock 26 would be the smallest you guys could carry out of whats allowed, but it would be nice if they would just reauthorize J frames, but I know they want to be 9mm only.
Any news on the M&Ps? or GEN4 Glocks?

I think part of the problem is the trigger pull gets lighter with use. As usual the rediculous specs the Dept comes up with ruins an otherwise good gun. The Smith & Wesson's we use meet Dept specs straight out of the box and thus have never been problematic.

I would love to see the J-frame make a come back but it will almost definately never ever happen.

I have also not heard anything about the M&P. As far as I know they are still getting enough 5946's. I know for a fact the current recruit class still picked from the Glock 19, Sig 226 and 5946.

Unless I mis-heard, the NYPD just recently had their Glocks redone to increase the trigger pull from the 9 - 10 pounds to 12 pounds minimum.

Amazes me........ instead or training their Officers to a higher standard and getting in more practice time, they make their guns harder to shoot accurately.

This is what happens when you try to fix problems with a 12# trigger pull rather than training. Now you have a firearm that is very difficult to employ good trigger control. It is not uncommon for a department head to blame equipment, firearms or ammo instead of poor training or the lack of training all together. In the end the officers pay. The K9 is an outstanding high quality firearm and makes a great off duty gun or BUG. This is just silly.

Most of the new kids never fired a revolver in their life. The 36 and the 640 were the BUG's of choice for the last generation, including my sons. My granddaughter, a new Arlington, VA officer didn't even want to shoot her dad's 10 or 36 when we went shooting recently. Off the subject, back in the day, an incompetent NYPD Comm. named Ben Ward even tried to get the duty revolver changed back from .38sp to .32. Just an example of how the NYPD is always going in reverse from national trends.

So maybe someone should introduce a J frame in 9x19 that uses full moon clips. Too obvious for S&W but Taurus might give it a try. Maybe in a hammerless design. Imagine a 9x19 Safty Hammerless Bicycle Gun ;-D

S&W already had the 940. But I believe it was dropped for lack of interest.

The New York City Police Department, unmarred by change since 1845.

The sad fact is if Bloomie and Ray Ray got their way all of us would be carrying a rape whistle and a foam baton instead of a firearm. This is why we will never go to a .40 or .45 cal, let a lone a 9mm that works the way it was intended. I have dreams that one day we will have a mayor and police commissioner who actually care about having a real police department and give us the equipment and training we need and deserve.

I think Ray Kelly had a hand in that as well. The transition to 9mm began at the end of Kelly's first term as PC. He tried mandating that all the new 9mms be issued with 10 round magazines. As soon as Bratton took over that policy was tossed and everyone was issued 15 round mags. It's hard to believe that man was once a respected supervisor in this department, as well as a LTC in the Marine Corps. A disgrace to both as far as I'm concerned.

NYPD has used the NY2 (11-12lb) trigger spring in their Glock 19s and 26s since first authorized in '93.

Bloomie is proud of the NYPD. Just recently he boasted about having "the NYPD is 7th largest army in the world." Joe

No, they can carry whatever they like with little to no consequences. Especially if they are in the Bronx.

By that time, there won't be any real cops left. Or, much of a city.....sad.

So the word is the motivation for pulling the Kahr was because of a higher rate of ADs than the other guns. They blame that on the gun's tendancy for the trigger pull to lighten up. I'll leave to the individual to assess the rediculousness of that theory.

I'm not sure about the rules regarding posting links, but the New York Daily News ran an article chock full of Puzzle Palace spin on this story. For those interested you can look it up, I don't want to violate that link posting rule.

I may be accused of being a hater, but I am not.
I like the state of NY and have a number of on-line friends from this state.
Too a man they would just as soon NYNY become a state unto its own mind and get the fire out of the state.
My ancestry is from the Finger lakes.
Blessings

You don't really want NYNY to be its own state, just like you don't want Wa DC to be a state. If they become states, then they each get two Senators, and you know they'll always be on the left side of the aisle. That's like handing your adversary your gun, and telling them you'll make do with your knife.
