Bubba, there are hundreds of .22 rifles out there. You need to narrow this down big time. What will you use it for? What type action are you interested in? Budget?
Ya gotta give us something to work with.

The Ruger Model 10/22 is an excellent auto loading rifle in 22LR if you want a range gun and mine is more accurate than my S&W 15-22. If you want a bolt action CZ makes some excellent 22LR rifles and they are usually more accurate then the auto loaders.

Like others have said you need to be more specific as to what you want and what you will be using it for.

My two favorite .22 firearms I currently own are a Model 17-3, and a Browning BL22.

The BL22 can be fired almost as fast as a semi-auto, due to the extremely short throw of the lever. They'll take S,L,&LR ammo, and they're accurate.

There are lots of other .22 rifles I like, I was just throwing that one out there for your consideration. You're likely to get a few other suggestions!

Haha! Bubbett here and if I knew what I wanted I wouldn't have asked. We don't hunt, we do target shoot. We do want to have a smaller cal rifle. Well... because we don't feel like we would be prepared if **** hits the political fan with out one.
So I guess we need something we could hunt with if needed. Lower price range with a good quality rifle would be nice.

I'm partial to the 10/22, love mine, it's almost as much fun as the 15/22 and more accurate. It's a great squirrel gun.

Everyone should have one in their collection.

Thank you... I have read that parts are easy to come by and there are all kinds of accessories for them. Is that true?

Ma'am--My son LOVES this little CZ. You can easily change out the barrels, .22, 22 Mag, .17. Beautifully stocked, tack driver, bolt action. (If you wanted a bolt action).

CZ-USA CZ 455 American Combo - CZ-USA

You can't go wrong with the Ruger either.

The best .22 ever made in my opinion is the Nylon 66. But they have become collector's items and are hard to find and expensive. Why Remington does not come back out with them is beyond me.

There are ton's of accessories, you can make it anything you want, there's a Ma Deuce setup for it. You can search the web, there's a lot of good info about the platform.

I have one that the only original part is the receiver. Changed barrel, stock, trigger group, optics. It makes a ragged hole out to 25 yards.

I beg your pardon M'am. Screen names don't often have a gender. However, its is a pleasant surprise. I'm always happy to see new ladies on the board and in shooting sport.

For just general plinking and range use, a 10/22 wouldn't be a bad start. Straight out of the box, they aren't bad rifles. But they could stand a bit of improvement.
Most of the 10/22 owners I know (including me) put a bunch of extra money into them in them for trigger work and after market parts to make better shooters out of them.
10/22s, along with ARs, are sort of the Barbies of the gun world. There seem to be no end to all the goodies you can buy for them.
Now if you want to do some serious target work, I'd go with a nice bolt action with a decent scope. Lots of good choices at reasonable prices out there.
Don't overlook used rifles either. The older Marlin Model 60 semi-auto and Marlin bolt actions can be extremely accurate and can often be found in good shape for about $100.
I would simply recommend that you take your time. See and handle as many as you can. Then go with right just feels right to you.
But, fair warning. .22s can be highly addictive. Easy to shoot, ammo is cheap and they're just plain fun! You buy a rifle, then you want a handgun. Next it'll be some other .22 that strikes your fancy. Ya just can't have one. They tend to multiply like rabbits.
I only have about 20 of them.

I bought a Ruger American Rimfire bolt action. With a $30 scope, it makes silver dollar sized holes all day long, at 100 yards, using any ammo.
Very nice trigger. Bland plastic stock.
It was so accurate, it was boring, so I yanked the scope and use the stock sights at 25 yards, to make it interesting.
Good gun, for what it is, but plastic guns are less appealing to me.

Forget the 10/22. I have one of those and even with the custom bedded stock and $300 Volquartzen barrel it isn't up the the accuracy one of these gives you right out of the box. In my opinion, CZ makes one of the finest rimfire rifles in the world for the money.

IMHO, Ruger 10/22s are fine if you want to spend twice the purchase price in modifications. I have worked on them for years and had several until Remington came out with their Model 597. I found it was significantly more accurate with way more types of 22 LR ammo than any of my 10/22s. I have sold all my 10/22s and now have three Rem. M 597s. One is box stock, one has a trigger job with red dot optical sight and one is a HB in a target stock with a big scope. I can't believe how accurate it is. Neither can the Pickett Pin Ground Squirrels of Northern Nevada. ......

BTW, magazines are cheap and not near as quarrelsome as the Rugers.

22 rifles are like coffee cups, everybody has a favorite, but nobody has only one!

I have had my 10/22 Deluxe since Spring 1973. I traded an old single shot unmarked Winchester and $40 for it, 3 spare mags and 2 bricks (500) of ammo. I think I may even have some of the ammo left, I didn't just make noise with it like many kids!

For 22 bolt actions, you can buy junk, and be dissatisfied, or you can spend a few thousand dollars on Olympic quality Target rifle (Top line Anschutz is about 4 grand, without sights). Or anywhere in between. A very nice adult sized, walnut stocked, and well scoped 22 will run up to several hundred dollars, DEPENDING on what you want to pay for. I have a Weatherby and a Kimber in this class. I also have a scratched up JC Higgins somebody drilled too many holes in and let get rusty, but I put a good scope on it and it shoots fine, BUT nobody will ever call it a "Work of Art" or a "Thing of Beauty".

Marlin and Savage both make some affordable and very useable 22 bolt guns. Kimber make some expensive and very useable 22 bolt guns. The key is "How very usable do you want it to be?" Do you just want to shoot pop cans at 25 yards? or Do you want to shoot pop cans at 200 yards? It is easy to get guns and ammo that will do either, but a 200 yard gun will run 4 to 5 times as much, and to ammo is about $12.00 for 50 rounds! (top target ammo can run $23.00 for Lapua & $21.00 for Eley)

At the opposite end of the spectrum, in the late 80's, I bought my 3 sons $69.00 (on sale) Brazilian made copies of Remington's 'Nylon 66'. They still have a riot shooting on their grandpa's farm. They shoot pests, varmints, hedge apples, and dirt clods and every once and a while formal targets, but the fun wouldn't increase with more expensive rifles, but the distance necessary for bragging rights would!

For Christmas 1950, mom bought dad a Mossberg tube fed semi-auto 22 rifle with a scope, new for $18.50 +tax. The last weekend of July 2012 we were at the farm celebrating his 80th birthday. His 62 year old "cheep" gun was outshooting his 50 year younger grandsons! He has 5 or 6 22's that are "nicer" and defiantly more expensive! But they are not any more fun!

When it is all said and done, you do get what you pay for! So spend a little more up front and not replace it later!

Ivan

My only .22 rifle at present is a Ruger 10-22 takedown, as I need something easy to transport. Parts are easy to find, and the TD is easier to clean (my opinion).

But it the election goes wrong, you will want a bolt action .22 to avoid the mess that could come.

The Ruger 10-22 is my first choice when it comes to .22 LR utility rifles. They are extremely reliable and reasonably accurate. There are numerous aftermarket accessories and replacement parts are readily available.

I own a vintage 10-22 with the walnut stock that sports a Compact Burris 3x9 scope. I also own a stainless model with the black composite stock and a silver 3x9 Tasco scope. I'd also like to add one of the Mannlicher stocked guns just for the fun of it.

Like many others, I've owned several .22 rifles and shot others. The Ruger 10-22 and Remington 597 are accurate, reliable little rifles. I've been especially impressed with a little Ruger American rimfire. It has proven to be of good quality and is relatively inexpensive. Good factory trigger and accurate.

Review the Ruger 10-22 lineup, select the color and style rifle you prefer. Then send it to Clark Custom for their $145 tune-up. Of course, the tune-up will cost a little more because of additional items you choose to add and the $35 return freight. I have a full Clark Custom and one that has the $145 package. I can shoot the full custom a little better from the bench but the standard rifle tweaked is super accurate and much more user friendly in the woods.

A vote for a Henry .22 lever action, sweet little rifle, accurate and well made with lifetime warranty. Same for their .22 mag.

I bought a 10-22 years ago and the only mod I did was put a $10 rimfire scope on it. It is way more than accurate enough for head shots on squirrels in the treetops and coyotes a hundred yards out.

They are great rifles and will serve you well.

.22 covers a lot of ground......... price wise new $250-2,000.

10/22s are fun.....5,10,15,25 rd factory mags...............I have several but they are limited use in Pa. as you can't hunt with a semiauto.....so you really can't have them in the woods

I've come to love the CZ line of rimfires........452s 453 and the newest 455s......... my 452s (there are several versions) will all shoot one hole groups at 50yds.....if you can find a 453 you get a single set trigger.... and the newer 455s allow you to add/change barrels. Price wise....low $300s to just under $500 for a FS/mannlicher.

Most who own them feel you have to spend twice the money to get a better rifle and then it's only marginally better.

I bought one of these and am very happy with it, got a great deal at $115 at a local store , you'll need a scope or red dot as it doesn't have any sights

I've owned a bunch of 22 rifles over the years. Had a dozen of them at one time.

These days, I'm down to just one, a Ruger 10/22, from Wal-Mart, AKA "The Wally-World Special." It has a 22" stainless steel barrel, and a DSP style birch stock. It has the heft of a "big rifle."

You can modify them if you want to until the only thing original is the Serial Number (actually you can build one and not use any Ruger Parts, but that's a different story), but I've never wanted to do that. This one has had a trigger job, and it mounts a 4X Bushnell "blister pack" scope, and a $5.00 nylon sling from Wal-Mart. It is a squirrel killing machine.

I don't think Wal-Mart sells it anymore, but it's available through another distributor through most gun stores.

I'm planning on getting my GS a 10-22 for Christmas.
He'll be getting the baseline carbine- blue metal and a Wood stock.
I'm starting him old school wood and steel.
He's got plenty of time ahead to go plastic!

10/22 is a very nice rifle. That said, if I was only going to have one .22 it would be a bolt-action with a scope; Ruger American is a great one, as is the CZ series. Second choice would be a lever action; Browning's BL-22 is super, but so is Henry. Third would be the 10/22.

Why do you choose a bolt action?

Traditionally bolt action rifles are more accurate than semi autos.

Ruger 10/22. Fairly inexpensive. Reliable and accurate enough for small game and plinking. Not really meant for competitive target shooting. An American icon. Look up .22 caliber rifle in the dictionary. You will see a picture of the 10/22 next to it.

Bolt rifle, one of the CZ's, they make em like we used to.

Semi auto, Ruger 10/22.

Lever action, Marlin 39A.

Bought a 10/22 that shot OK but would be much more accurate by adding a bunch of aftermarket parts. In stock form it never could equal the accuracy of my old Marlin 60. Found a Marlin model 60 50th Anniversary rifle and traded the 10/22 for it. Out of the box the Marlin 60 tops the 10/22 everytime. For a top bolt action the CZ 455 is the best bang for the buck. With the right ammo, mine will shoot quarter size groups at 50 yds all day long. Savage also offers some good .22 bolt actions at reasonable prices.

Having owned near a dozen 10/22's (and still keeping a couple) I'll offer this.
They are very good guns out of the box. Inexpensive, reliable and reasonably accurate. They are NOT however tack drivers in the carbine version. They aren't design to be. The blessing and the curse for the 10/22 is the availability of drop in aftermarket accessories available. (Stocks, barrels, action parts, machined trigger groups......) It's a rare person that buys a 10/22 carbine and has the willpower to leave it alone. ( There are whole websites dedicated to these fallen folks.) It's REAL easy to get sucked into dumping hundreds of dollars into the gun to make it a tack driver. In the end, you end up with a $800 10/22 that may or (often) may not meet your expectations. I know, I've done it three times and never had a gun that was worth what I put into it. I'm a slow learner.
Personally, I'd advise that if you insist on a 10/22, go with one of the models that is upscale enough so that you won't get tempted (as badly) to lay into it. Maybe one with graceful lines an better sights as CajunBass shows above ( They made it as late as two years ago as the 50th anniversary model, BTW.) . If not that maybe a take down model, deluxe stocked or factory target.
Enough said, back to therapy for me.

ps. If you want a tack driver out of the box, buy a CZ bolt action

For your SHTF scenario, hunting for food would be your primary purpose and bolt-actions are inherently more accurate. That said, even the 10/22 can do 1" groups at 100 yards so the point is probably moot. My main reason is simplicity. Less to go wrong with, less parts to break, less failures to feed, less failures to eject, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I've got several bolt, lever and semi .22's, but if I were only going to have one to put food on the table I'd keep my 1960's Sears bolt-action .22 topped with a Simmons 3X9 22 Magnum scope. It shoots long rifle, long and short, never fails to feed or eject, and can do 1" groups at 100 yards with the right ammo.

Another plus for bolt or lever guns is they can shoot varying power rounds. My semi's do best with hot .22's, but the bolt and levers can shoot sub-sonic and even the whisper quiet loads without fail. It might make a difference if you are trying to hunt in more urban settings. I routinely shoot Remington Cbee's out of mine on my 5 acres. As quiet if not more so than a good pellet gun.

I have a 10/22 and a bolt action RAR.
The 10/22 looks and handles better but the bolt shoots way better.
Hard to go wrong with the CZ or Marlin also.
Are there any ranges near you that have rifles to rent ?

So I guess we need something we could hunt with if needed. Lower price range with a good quality rifle would be nice.

Per your requirements, I would buy a bolt action.

As stated prior bolt actions are normally more accurate. And unless you intend to go to a gravel pit and burn lot's of ammo shooting pop cans, a semi auto isn't necessary. So I would go bolt action.

CZ is the best bang for the buck. Their quality is outstanding. Out of the box accuracy is amazing. I have two 455 series rifles. At 50 yards and cheap ammo I can cover my group with a quarter. With better ammo I can use a nickel. Both of my rifles have 3x9 scopes.

See CZ's website here.CZ-USA Rimfire - CZ-USA

Cz's cost more than a 10/22. But the difference isn't that great. You will have to consider whether you want open sights or a scope. If you want a scope then you will possibly need a scope mount and you will definitely need scope rings.

Some 10/22 rifles used to come with a scope mount. Don't know for sure if they still do. The CZ 455 has an integral Weaver style scope mount measured at 11mm.

The CZ comes with a 5 round magazine but 10 and 25 round magazines are available.

You have much to consider. Especially if you intend to buy only one. But a word to the wise, BUY AMMO NOW!!

If you can find one a great 10/22 variation is the "International" with full length Mannlicher style stock......... add a little 1-3 or 1-4x20 shotgun scope and you're good to go and get a lot of attention at the range or in the wood.

That was a good choice. Those Marlin autos can be surprisingly accurate.

Only one 22 rifle and two pistols, unless the 22 Jet counts.
Winchester 61 mfg 1948, k-22, 1953, and a Hi Standard Victor. The Victor is the Hamden military from 1975.

The Marlin 60 is a fine choice. A heck of a lot of accuracy and tube fed, which is great for the field. A good value as well.

You can't go wrong with the Ruger either.

The best .22 ever made in my opinion is the Nylon 66. But they have become collector's items and are hard to find and expensive. Why Remington does not come back out with them is beyond me.

The two main features for a .22 rifle are accuracy (at 100 yards or so) and fun. I suppose the ultimate in accuracy is a venerable Winchester M52 with a train-axle barrel and a stock 4" wide at the forearm. I came close to buying one of those recently. However I bought a CZ 452 "American" a few years ago and love the slim barrel, smooth-acting bolt and straight box magazines. It gets boring shooting at a bulls eye at 100 yards, so my family takes aim at the "NRA" logos in the border, or simply a random bullet hole to serve as a mark.

For sheer fun, it's hard to beat a lever gun. Mine is a Marlin "Mounty" inherited from my grandfather, who bought it in 1954 (traded for a .36 Kentucky squirrel rifle, converted from a flintlock to percussion cap by his grandfather).

I recently saw my first Lefthand CZ 22.
It did look really good!
Also recently saw my first LH Remington 581.
A little 'plain jane' looking, but not bad.
In both cases I announced I was past buying LH guns.
I'm the only lefty in my family.

Congrats.

I have a 1973 Glenfield (Marlin) model 60, given to me by my dad and will soon go to my grandson.

It is accurate, forgiving of ammo and nearly indestructible.

Yours will serve you well.

You did good. My father in law has a Marlin 60 he keeps by the back door on his acreage. Has had it since early 90s. Last year his son bought a better scope and I mounted it and sighted it in for him. Gave the gun a good cleaning...probably the first one since it was new......took it out and sighted it in. It really surprised me how well it shot off a rest. I stoked it full of CCI Velocitors and told him he was good to go for killing 50 yd ground hogs. And he has killed a few since then.

Here's what we got a Marlin 60 older model 1982. Took it to the range and shot it. Got the Tasco scope zeroed in and she hits center every time. Assuming I can sit still :-) now to clean her up and put a coat of True Oil on the stock and she will be a beauty! Thanks everyone for all of your tips!!! So much appreciated!
