Holster designer/builder here -- is there a member who has both the 9mm and 40 cal Browning HP who can/will compare some basic dimensions for me? I've only the 9mm here (well, a blue gun, no real pistols here).

Thanks so much, in advance :-).

The dimensional differences are very subtle. The only difference that may affect your holster will be the width of the slide. The 9mm slide measures approx. 0.885" wide just ahead of the ejection port. The .40 slide at the same spot is 0.075" wider which results in the slide being 3 ounces heavier. ( ref. Stephen Camp's "The Shooters Guide to the Browning Hi Power").:)

My BHP .40 S&W fits very well into a standard leather 1911 holster...almost like it was made for it.

I do have both and would be happy to provide you any measurements you desire.

Randy

Thank you so much, Randy. Oldster has given me a good head start with his post, so thanks to you, too, Oldster :-).

My holsters are so tightly molded in horsehide, which is as thick and rigid as equal thickness Kydex after the former is hot-air dried, that I'm wanting to be clear what I might need to add to my 9mm blue gun (one of the few I acquired here in Australia because it is still their Armed Forces sidearm, and is marked Industria Argentina).

I'm comparing these dimensions:

6504369_02_fn_browning_hi_power_40s_w_640.jpg the thicknesses at the sections circled A,B,C; and the dimensions D,E. I'm an expat and have learned to 'think' in both thousandths and in millimetres; and if I didn't my Vernier calipers do.

One of my holsters, an avenger style, for the HP, shows the relatively tight fit (nobody's getting a 1911 into this one without a mallet):

Having only oldster's slide thickness comparison I've pressed on for lack of the others I was hoping for; so my agent and I (and the customer) will find out the hard way if just increasing the slide thickness on my mold does the trick!

rednichols: the only other exterior dimensional difference ( except differing and various front and rear sights) discussed by Stephen Camp, is in the extractors. Since that dimension is contained within the slide, it wouldn't affect the holster. :)

Red,

The IWB you built for me fits the 40 cal perfect. I think you said you added two layers of masking tape each side of the slide.

A= .085”
B= .732”
C= .965”
D= 2.615”
E= 1.072”

I don’t have a 9 mm Hi Power to compare.
