I've been so pleased with the Vortex red dot that I installed on my AR, I decided to buy another, only this time for my Ruger Mark II. Today was the first time I had the chance to test it out, and again, I couldn't be more pleased. I tested four different brands of ammo (well, three brands, since two are made by federal), and it loved them all. Interestingly, the CCI Mini-Mag was not the champ today, as it is in most of my rifles. The two best were the American Eagle, and the Browning .22 LR.

I plan to move the optic back a notch, but first I need to shorten the screw that holds the rail to the receiver. That's a project for another day, today I just wanted to shoot and see what I'm working with. Now I can't wait to go shoot it some more!

Wise Choice! I have the Vortex Venom on my Kimber LW 45 and my Ruger 57. Recently gave my Daughter a Ruger MK IV Target, and had a Crimson Trace red dot I wasn’t using. Doesn’t shoot anywhere near as well as the Venom. Watch the sales, now and again you can grab a Venom for about $200

If you like the ‘Donut of Death’ sight picture, check out the Holosun, put the 507K on my 43X. 2 MOA Red Dot only, 32 MOA Circle only, or 32 Circle and 2 MOA Dot together, your choice with the push of a button.

RobertJ - Nice rig, and seems accurate. I have several handguns with red dots mounted, and like them.

Question about the mount on your Ruger - What is the make, and how does it attach? Seems like it clamps in the rear sight?

I have a scoped MK-ll that uses an old Weaver mount that clamps onto the receiver, and allows the use of the irons as well, but it is bulky and a little ugly..lol. Works well though.

Nice set-up and nice shootin'! Is the aperture on the Venom bigger then the aperture on the Burris FFII/III? I had a FFII on my Buck Mark that I really liked except the 'window' was a tad small for my liking. So, I got rid of it and went with a tube style red dot. Both work great. i can pick-up the dot faster on the AT3, but like the looks of the FFII better.

I don't know what the make is, I picked it up on ebay for 22 bucks. Not a well-known manufacturer, I'd bet. It has a small piece that fits in the dovetail (the rear sight needs to be removed), and then a screw holds the rail to that. The screw is a little long, and I need to trim it so it will fit flush when everything is tightened up. Then I can move the optic back a notch, which is where I'd prefer it.

Now, that's some great shooting!

I'm not sure about the aperture size compared to Burris.

What I really like about my new set-up is that as my eyes get older, they don't focus front sight, rear sight, and target at the same time quite the way they used to. Close range, no problem, but further out, not so much. These new-fangled sights really fixed things for me.

Thanks. And welcome to my world as far as eye sight goes! lol

It'll group a might bit better when I use CCI SV/RN and/or SK Jagd SS/HP, but I keep it zeroed with CCI Mini Mags for varmints and such. Although, I have ruined the day of many a varmint with the SK SS/HP's. :D

Hang on to your original sight. I bought one on GB last year and was the only bidder. It had 5 magazines and sold for less than many Mark II's started for. My assumption and that of the seller [consigned] was that it had a red dot instead of a conventional sight. I bought a new sight for $45 and was happy. Red dot went on a contender bbl.

I am new to red dot, & Browning Buck Mark. Haven't even fired the gun yet. Red dot is a Browning that a friend gave me to try. A quick question, do most shooters use 2 eyes when using a red dot? Bob

Nice combo you have there. You are going to like it!

The answer to your question is; 'YES'. Both eyes open when using a red dot/reflex style optic. I suppose you can use just one eye. It will work just fine, but it kind of defeats the purpose of the optic.

Both eyes open works best for me. Ideally the dot or circle should look like it’s hovering in the air about 25 yards in front of you. That is assuming it’s a parallax free optic.
