Default Savage model 24.

Always intended to add one of these to the stable. Almost waited too long but finally picked up one today.

It is a model 24 D. P series. .22 magnum over .20 ga. It has a 6 digit serial number with a B prefix.

Any ideas as to the apx age ? Thanks for any info on it.

Looking forward to roaming the Ozarks with it before someone else becomes the new caretaker of this vintage combo gun.

I remember those from the ‘60s.

Cousin Bob and cousin Steve had them.

I remember hunting with the cousins. I had a Stevens 311.

The thing that stands out was the competition between us for birds. (what would you expect from 13year olds?).

I usually won because their guns were slower to get into action on flushing birds: the external hammer on their 24’s had to be cocked by hand and my 311 only required the safety to be slipped off as I mounted the gun.

I also had a quick second shot.

Slightly off topic, I have a model 24V, 357 magnum over the 20 gauge with a six digit serial number beginning with D. I haven’t seen many of that model.

Post a picture of it! No pic, it didn't happen!

My 24s, a 24V in .223 over 20ga, and a 24C "Camper's Companion" in 22LR over 20ga. The "Campers Companion" has ammo storage in the stock.

I’ve always been interested in these but I have never acquired any of them! I prefer the 60’s vintage over the new editions of course. Now I have something else to be on the lookout for………thanks!

I had one some years ago. 22LR/20ga. The perfect "pot hunters" gun. If it walked, ran, or flew in Hanover county, it was good for it. Probably not perfect for anything, but "good enough" for everything.

Years back I had one of the original as far as caliber and gauge went. Twenty two and 4.10. I was abut 15 at the time and that was a good gun to take on trips afield. Of course I traded it in a couple years later. FWIW I do not even remember what I traded for so it was a trade I now regret!

I had one years ago that was .222 over 20ga. I wasn't reloading at that time and the rifle ammo was hard to find and costly. I traded it but wish I had kept it now. Great guns

Rubone, sorry my photo posting skills sank with. Photo bucket.

Really like the idea of the Camper's companion but have never encountered one in person.

Found a web site that showed model 24 D with a B preceeding a six digit SN is circa 1950s.

I've found the Savage 24 to be a fine all-purpose firearm for field or survival purposes. Mine is a .22 LR over 20 gauge. I fitted it with a scarce 1x scope that will work with either barrel.

I have a 24V (.222 Rem over 12 ga.)with a C042xxx serial number. My database list the year as "post 1968".

Apparently, not a lot of good info on the newer models. Many did not have SNs before the GCA of 1968. Instead there was a date letter code on the receiver. You can google several web sites that reference the codes.

I have only had one, a 357/20 gauge, and it soon went down the road. I like the concept but there are things I don't care for. One is the scope situation. Mine was not able to shoot both scoped rifle and shotgun. Read about it and Savage said scope had to be removed to shoot the shotgun. Sounds like something the government would design. For those that don't know, the US military had a few of these as air force bail out survival guns years back. I always thought that while the 22lr/20 gauge would be a prefect back east survival gun where food acquisition was the main concern. However out west and in places like Alaska, the shotgun barrel become less useful. I have always wanted, and had an opportunity to purchase such a conversion, would be a 22 magnum/ 308 Win. This would only require a double bladed adjustable rear sight. One for each barrel. This would be the cat's meow for us open country people. 22 magnum for small game and 308 for large game at extended ranges that are so common for us. Powerful enough for things that bite back and the occasional run in with a sasquatch. This then would be the perfect canoe, airplane, snowmobile, or just knock around gun.

Mine has see-thru mounts specifically designed for this gun. The scope for the rifle and the fixed sights for the shotgun. But, actually at short shotgun range the scope works for the shotgun too.

I had a .22 LR/20 Gauge. Firing of the .22 barrel was unreliable, could never figure out what was wrong with it. So I either traded or sold it, don’t remember which as that was over 30 years ago.

I’ve had a bunch of them: .22/.410, .22/20 camper, .22/20, .22 mag/20, .222/20, .30-30/20, .357/20 and the later .30-06/12. I sold off or traded the ones that weren’t regulated very well and others that weren’t being used as my requirements changed. Only have the .22 mag/20 is left.

The reason for not shooting the shotgun barrel when the scope is mounted is probably that the 3/8 inch dovetail for the scope mount is unable to grip the scope mount securely enough. My solution is to push the mount right against the rear sight before clamping it to the dovetail. It works well for me.

Savage 24s are very popular guns around this area. Many dads and gramps are looking to arm their families with them. But they are 24 snobs, they won’t give jack for newer models. They want the solid barrel models with side select. If they are hard up they may take solid barrel with hammer spur selector. The split barrel models have poor reputation for point of aim. The 22-410 & 20g models are most popular. Second are 22mg models.
The older 24Ds in high condition going for $600- $1000, blue model $600-$800. The newer ones are tagged with same prices but don’t see them selling.

I have a older Stevens model 22-410 with the plastic stock and forearm, marked USAF 49-1301 on bottom of receiver. This firearm is in very good condition and shoots exceptionally at 50 yards.

I have a 22 LR and 20 gauge x 2 3/4". I like it and mine wears a red dot. I think the scope warning was that the recoil of a shotgun might ruin the crosshairs of the scopes from the 60's.

DIZIADZI , addressed the issue people have trouble with and why it is advised against, using a scope when shooting the shotgun barrel. The scope bases dovetails don't have enough purchase to secure the scope under recoil of the shotgun barrel. Apparently, he has figured out how to avoid the scope moving problem.

Wow, my dad has one of those that I used as a kid for squirrels and groundhogs growing up. I had no idea they were worth much of anything. I still remember the 22 mag shoots high and right so low left hold. Funny how you remember those things. I haven't thought about that gun for 50 years. I know it is still sitting in his gun cabinet. Had a really pretty case colored receiver, but it had a hammer it was not an internal firing mechanism. A barrel selector on the side. You would get a surprise if you thought you were shooting the 22 mag and forgot to change the barrel selector.

I have a 30-30/20ga., a 357/20ga and a 22/20ga Camper. The camper goes with me everywhere! In the carrying case I keep a 100 pack of CCI Mini-Mags, and 2 plastic ammo boxes made for 600 Nitro. In each of these I carry 5-Bernanke Slugs, 5-Federal Premium N0 4 Buck, 5-#4 Express, & 5-7.5 AA's. I also have a shoulder strap, 2.5x scope, and cleaning kit.

This gun has given me so many impromptu hunts. Numerous Raccoons, groundhogs and squirrels!

When it gets down to the Two Gun Arsenal, the 357/20 and a 686 will serve you well!

I don't know why I bought or even keep the 30-30/20, but I see no reason to get rid of it either!

Ivan

When I was a kid in the 50s, our across the street neighbor had one with the Tenite plastic stock, brown as I remember. No idea if it had any military connection, but I doubt it did. I once had a Noble .22 slide action rifle with a Tenite buttstock and slide handle.

There was all kinds of attempts made to scope 24s. Never saw an easy fix for the scope walk problem. Some went as far as to get custom steel bases made. All kinds of DIY attempts also. Redfield made a set of steel rings for grooved 22 that would hold up fairly well. They still would walk after 10-12 shotgun shots.

A brilliant design. My 24C is a game getter. It went on many a hunting trip.

My granddaddy bought a Stevens O/U like it at the beginning of WW II, to control the bunnies in his garden. It sat in the bathroom closet while I was growing up.

On my 15th birthday, I received a new Ithaca Model 49 in .22 LR. Then I was given the .22/.410. It needed a new firing pin. Once that was fixed, I shot a bunch of .22s through it & a number of .410 shells as well.

Both rest comfortably in the gun safe, never to be sold, but to be passed down in the family one day.

I have an older one that had the selector on the side but the hammer was changed out to be the selector before I got it. It is 22 magnum over 410 with walnut wood. I have a redfield peep for mine which works for both shotgun and rifle. I did have to raise the front sight though

I would love to find a reasonably priced 357
Over 20 gauge I refuse to pay the inflated prices on GB

My 357 and 30-30 both have a "scope base adapter" factory soldered to the upper barrel, then a Weaver base screws to that. It is very secure but, without scope removal there is no using the iron sights.

They are a fun and useful item. I had one of the case hardened 22/410s as a truck gun years ago but let it get away. My wife had a .308/12 gauge which became part of a trade. Currently I am trying to clean up a .22 Mag/20 gauge with the side lever that came to me with significant surface rust on the barrel. It is getting the "treatment" on the metal and will probably also refinish the stock. One among a group of "projects" for my planned retirement, which will probably happen when I am 89.

Mine is a .222 and it is drilled and tapped for a Weaver mount. No dovetail. I guess mine is a newer model, or possibly the ones chambered for anything larger than .22 RF were built that way.

I have other shotguns and rifles that use scopes and never had a problem with movement or crosshairs. Of course, you need to use a centerfire scope, not a rimfire one.

Bought a 22/20 two or three years ago. I really wanted to like it but couldn't. A mediocre rifle at best. A barely adequate shotgun. Didn't do anything particularly well. I know they have a following, I just didn't get it. Flicking between barrels wasn't particularly easy or fast, plus cocking the hammer. The process seemed too slow for a hunting rig. Sold mine and never looked back.

It has been over thirty years, but I think that the scope mount I had on my .22/20 used a double clamp that fastened around the .22 barrel.

Any ideas as to the apx age ? Thanks for any info on it.

My best friend had one that was a case colored receiver 22LR over 410. Beautiful rich walnut stock. It belonged to his father. I first saw it in the very early 60's. I bought the same thing in the mid 70's, and I rank it with one of the worst guns I have ever had. It performed well, but I could not hit a thing with it, open sights or scope. I was not as knowledgeable as I am now, but the barrels were misaligned , I am sure. I only saw this one other time in a Browning Citori trap. 3 class AA shooters could not break more than 10 with a brand new gun. It went back to dealer as I recall

A 24S-A in that identical configuration was my first gun; I still have it. There are certainly many more practical guns out there, but none of them have the memories this one does.

I got one just like that for my 10th Christmas.
It got stolen by burglars when I was 14.
I'd love to find an affordable one just like it.

My father bought this 24H many years ago. As a young boy I spent many a morning hunting with this rifle/shotgun. A regular shotgun was so much better for bird hunting and a .22 rifle was a much more accurate then this thing. But for tootling around the desert it was hard to beat the versatility, unless you are in an area with big bears.

I had no use for the Model 24 back when I owned one. That hasn’t changed after 30 years.

If I were to have "one long gun" for everything, it would be 7x57R over 12 gauge, With barrel inserts for 22 RF and 221 Fireball. Since I haven't hit the lottery yet, The M-24's fill that nitch very well! There are several companies in Europe that make combo guns, Their prices often run what 4 or 5 24's cost these days!

As a boy's first gun or an old man's truck gun, Savage 24's are heard to beat! Like a dummy, my older brother got a 22/410 for Christmas 1964, He traded it for a 243 Remington 600 in 1969. Every time I have one of my 24's in front of him, he says he is so sorry!

Long ago, my wife’s cousin tried to give me a Drilling. I don’t remember much about it except it was German, 16x16 with the rifle barrel in some European metric CF caliber I don’t remember. It also had a hard carrying case. Like a fool I turned it down. That might have been more worthwhile than a Model 24.

I have a model 24 in .22lr/20 guage 3”mag, and received it as my 1st gun in ‘78 for my 12th bday….I had really wanted a 22 repeater but my Dad thought the 24 to be a little more use for me as we hunted upland birds and gophers in Montana…the 1st thing I shot with it was a mallard...I eventually liked it very much and have taken coyote, badger, one rock chuck- and a slew of Huns and gophers with it and I will keep it till they push me in the hole….

The very first gun my Dad bought for me was a Md 24 .22LR-.410 He bought it at Bob's pawn shop in Lakeland Florida in 1966
when I was 9 years old. He paid $15.00 for it. It is still in like new condition in my safe.

I’ve got three of them. 22:410, 22/20, 22mag/20. I think they are handy little guns. Not great for anything but good for about everything. I’ve killed a lot of game with them. Also, a 22 is way better for putting a car-hit deer out of its misery than a pocket knife. I usually keep one in my truck when I’m out and about and have dispatched deer, killed coyote, grouse, pheasant, rabbits, and porkies with it.

I have had one for years in .22RF/410 gauge. Great for teaching new shooters. The early ones had some type plastic stocks and foreends.

I had a .22/20 Camper. There were still rounds in the buttstock trap when I bought it at a reservation trading post - the .22s had slid back and forth so much the bullets had flattened like wadcutters.

I kept it in my G-ride for some vague “survival” reason. Then it finally dawned on me if I broke an axle in the deep rez the very last thing on my to-do list would be small game hunting. I traded it off and put a case of MREs in my rig instead.

See my #23. Several manufacturers were experimenting with Tenite (cellulose acetate) for plastic gun stocks during the 1940s and 50s. That was somewhat before Remington started making their Nylon 66 .22 rifle stocks, and of course plastic M16 furniture. When I was a kid, I had a Daisy BB gun with a Tenite stock. It wasn’t a Red Ryder.

After years of hunting. I finally started hunting an area with turkeys. So I bought a 223/ 12 guage. It worked great on the turkeys and the 12 guage 3 inch worked on my shoulder.
