Gun Safes - Recommendations?

I'd like to hear the rest of that story

Rainfall of Biblical proportions . 30 inches in two days . The water came up quick once it started rising . I emptied my safe and put everything in the attic . By the time we got over the denial it was too late to evacuate . All the roads around me were under water . A couple of Game Wardens in an Air Boat pulled up to my front door and loaded up me , the wife , and the dog . I measured the waterline in my foyer at 49 inches after we got back a couple of day later .

I think the best safe is a free one. If I can ever let go of stuff on a bigger scale, I'll give the safes away to someone who will move it themself. I bet there's a lot of people in Florida willing to do the same.

We spend a lot of time dancing on the head of a pin about the best this and that, But I think most of the time a safe is just a deterrent for non-professional thieves or ones without much time to spend inside, and of course curious children and adults.

Best thing I've read in this whole thread.

Always buy bigger than you think you need. Gun capacity is only half of what the advertisement for the safe company says it is unless you only want to store handguns in it.
Buy fire resistant bags to store documents and cash before putting them in the safe.
I have two safes. Both are the mechanical dial versions.
Be aware that most safes people have can be peeled open on the sides with a metal cutting wheel and a pair of channel lock pliers in about 10 minutes.

Thought about this some more while taking a walk. I like my electronic lock safe because I don't have to get a locksmith to pick my own, more memorable combination. I trust my mechanical safe more, probably just age bias. But I have one over 25 years old that I used almost daily while working. About once every three or four years I'll be standing in front of it with no idea what the combination is. :-) So far I can leave for a few minutes and it will come to me, but I also have it written down on a piece of paper in the electronic lock safe, just in case.

I'm glad you made it out safely

The best part about my safe is no one knows I have it.

We live in an apartment I don't think there's anybody in this building now who was here when we moved that safe in. I'm pretty sure there's no one here that was living here when I was working as a security guard so there's no one that saw me coming and going in a uniform with a gun on.

Quite a few of my neighbors make it pretty clear they own guns and that's their prerogative. I don't.

Spot on, Smoke! Keeping a low profile is the first layer of security. I am the same. A number of neighbors has mentioned their guns and from me they get a non-committal response. Much as I'd like to discuss guns and shooting with them, I don't partake. While I enjoy their company, I don't trust any of them to keep their traps shut.

So true

I didn't really understand that listed safe capacity is hardly 1/2 what they call it, plus I had no intention of growing my assortment, so I ended up in the position of having to either sell my safe to buy a larger one, or keep it and buy another one or two. I chose the latter and one reason was that to get into 3 separate safes will take much longer than into one large one.

Most any locking cabinet will prevent a child or casual interested adult (cleaning lady, someone working in your home etc.) from "looking inside". A thief breaking in will go to more effort by just carrying it off or trying to get inside if too heavy. But the longer he's in there pounding or sawing the more likely someone hears it or the homeowner shows up. The heavier gauge of metal the more time it will take someone to cut through, and the heavier the safe the less likely someones will cart it off.

When we retired gave my old safe to a friend. Nice "Sun Welding" medium security 1100 lbs. But had a gated yard, close retired neighbors, house had unobscured outer view and quick police response. So just need something that would take a bit of time and tools to get into.

Now, way out in the boonies, property is gated, but only one house even visible from ours. Maybe 30-minute police response (county fire dept. is 2 miles away). Crooks could work on it a while. Whole different situation. House came with a "Winchester" safe in laundry room, so the best rifles are kept there. Put a really loud alarm on it.

I decided to go with an American Security safe for the handguns and valuables. Had a nice spot for it, color matched, and it seemed the best I could afford. Wasn't cheap, but 1-1948 Colt super 38 in original box/docs paid for it, so the other stuff can feel safe. Not bolted down, I had a buddy chastise me for that, till I told him it weighed 3500 lbs. empty. Have cameras in and out.
Lost my live security a few years ago, but I always used to worry bad guys would just shoot him, since no one would hear anyway. But if you didn't have anything, you probably wouldn't come in when he was here. If you were allergic to cats you probably won't stay long. About all we could do.

Like others have said, would be nice to have a gun cabinet like my Dad had. Those days are gone. Although I did see some gun rooms in LA that had steel jail like doors and alarms in the floors. Plus, they were counting on the quick response time of the PD, HA!

That is one of the best gun safes ever made that most people can’t or won’t afford. It is not a Residential Security Container. The TL-30 rating is almost the highest available.

Definitely consider Sturdy safe. Heavy duty
Thick steel all around. Best built residential
Gun safe in my opinion which I based on specifications
And construction methods.

Excellent! I think I'm good then. :D

FYI, that burned safe was a main piece of furniture in my living room. Twas a smallish house. The Phoenix, to wit, the new house, is twice as large and has a "safe room" in the center of the house. Technically, it was supposed to be for storm safety but with a large safe and three cabinets of varying sizes IT IS TIGHT in there.

That door is alarmed and double locked. It's not a room for the average sneak thief..........I hope!!!

It is generally a good idea to locate the safe against an outer wall because most house fires are hotter in the center of the house than around the outside walls.

I am not saying you shouldn't get a decent safe. I am saying that at a certain point your better off spending money on a camera system than a safe that is harder to get into. A medium level safe will stop the vast majority of thieves. But, a guy who can bust into a good medium level safe will most likely be able to open a considerably higher level one with out much more work or time.

Part of it is where you live. Not just how much crime there is, but proximity of neighbors, those neighbors.

I have 3 mid level safes. You can not move one without the others unless you open then to disconnect them. I also have a smile your on camera sign outside, visible cameras that cover every approach to my house and a no trespassing sign on the end of the driveway with bullet holes coming out of it.

But a thief would need to bring a plasma cutter, there is one in the shop along with porta powers, sledge hammers, wedges and pry bars.

But. of I am gone and a strange rig showed up one of my neighbors would notice it and they all have my number
