Neat old gun meant to be carried more than shot for self or home defense. Wouldn't shoot any HV ammo in if it were mine. Probably CB shorts

I once owned a Young America .22, the H&R equivalent to the 1900. It did have rectangular cylinder stop slots so it was a smokeless powder gun made later than your IJ.
I used low velocity 22 shorts in it with no issues. Longs and LRs were too long for the cylinder.

Back in 1900 .22 shorts were loaded with Black Powder and first introduced as a SD round. Imagine that! So low pressure rounds would be the way to go today in that neat old revolver.
It was way earlier that that. S&W introduced the 22 short along with their tip up, Model Number One revolver, in 1857.

The .22 Short is one of my favorite ctgs. Back when prices were cheap I stocked up. I bought several bricks of CCI CB caps and have shot a lot of them in my old Winchester model 62A chambered for .22 Short only. Very quiet but will easily kill a Rabbit or Squirrel in places where they are more numerous than out in the woods and fields 
These are neat little guns. I have owned several of the IJ 1900 series in 22 and 32 caliber. In good shape they can be fun little plinkers. Mainly shot CB loads in the 22 versions though I did occasionally shoot old standard velocity shorts too. 32 S&W rounds in the 32 versions. They are prone to the same wear issues of the older top breaks in regard to timing issues.
