Looking for your thoughts on 2 rifles available at a local shop.

First is a Remington 511, good condtion, definitely been used with marks on both wood and metal, honest wear. nothing horrible. Bore looks clean, rifling ok, maybe a little worn. Standard sights. 1 magazine, unsure if aftermarket or original. Price is $200.

Second rifle is a Winchester 69a. Bluing is great, some very minor marks. Wood is also great with very minor marks. Peep sights, look original or were competently installed. 1 magazine, again unsure if aftermarket or original. Price is $400.

I don't need either but I like older .22 bolt action rifles, as many here do. Sorry no pictures available today.

I like the Winchester more but the price seems a little high going by Gunbroker listings. Obviously the answer is to buy both but really dont need both as I already have some CZ, Ruger, and Marlin .22's.

Let me know your thoughts and/or experiences with either model.

Thanks

Get the Remington. It was made before all of the problems of today!

I would go with the Winchester. Absolutely love mine, highly accurate, and if you ever want to sell it you'll find plenty of potential buyers.
The only Remington 22 cal rifles I own are a pair of Model 34's. One from the first of production and one from the last year of production. Those things are so sweet to shoot it's unbelievable.

I was just looking at one of my favorites a Remingtion Model 121 pump made in 1948. The rifle is still in excellent condition and shoots as well as ever. I've often wondered what something of this apparent quality would cost if built today?

First gun I ever bought (1963) was a Win 69A. Still have it and it and it is still accurate and reliable. You won't be disappointed with the 69A but I would try to buy it for less than $400.

My father learned to shoot on the 511 Scoremaster, and my brother and I learned on the same rifle. I’ve refinished steel and furniture. Still a rack driver and better than my Kimber America.

Thank you for all the replies. As I suspected, either would fine but the Winchester is the better gun if only slightly. The shop has limited hours during the summer so I think both will still be available. I may try to 'bundle and save' and see if they will accept. The Winchester definitely seems over priced.

I don't have a 511 but I do have a 512, well actually two of them. Very accurate. I love them. Pawn shop .22s needing love are always hard to pass up.

I have one of each, I'm not giving up either one. :)

I did use to have a 512X, but don't care for the lifter mechanism used in them.

I also have a Remington 121, so it's not like I don't like tube feeds.

Here's a secret, don't tell anyone - you can't have too many good .22's.

Still have mine, never any problems, did you have jams?

Posts sure make me tempted to look for a vintage Remington or Winchester .22 The quality is often great and can often be had for a good price. Sure are many models to choose from but the bolt is my favorite.

I agree the price is too high on the Winchester. If I just had to have one of the two, I'd go with the Remington since it's priced more reasonable.

Years ago I had a 510, single shot. Never had the clip fed 511. Last year I got my hands on a mint 1942 512. These are the Targetmaster series.Get the Remington. Accurate, blued steel and real walnut. Refinish the stock if it needs it. Rub it with hot linseed and pumice, and then wax it.

You will be glad you did. They are fine guns. What are the 2 letters on the bbl? I can give you a date

I would go for the 69a Winchester, I always wanted one but never had a chance to get one, after the 69 I would like to have a model 75 sporter I had a chance back in the late 70's for the sporter but he wanted 600. Jeff
