Yipee, I just picked mine up today! It is awesome. 28-2 6in barrel, blued, black rubber packmayr (sp?) grips. Serial # S3222xx. It is nicer than I anticipated and everything seems to work just fine with it. I am going to figure out how to send a picture. You just can't hardly find one of these revolvers in my area, I got it through gunbroker.

elrod - it is great to see you so excited about your new treasure - I'm the same way when I get a new one - they are great guns. I have bought a couple of guns from Gunbroker ,also , and have had good experience with it.
Enjoy

FirebirdV8 - that's a nice looking 28-2 - I know you'll enjoy it

My Hwy Patr is a 4 inch #N5315xx. It looks terrible but function is fine . THe sn says it is 30 yrs old. After seeing the factory rebuilds on this forum I think its time to give it a makeover at the Factory.

Whew. A lot of nice pieces in here. I just read the entire thread because I got an old HP and knew nothing about it. I now know a lot about it :D

Same here. I just picked up my first 28-2 today. A 4" version with SN S3053xx. I'm enjoying reading all about this particular model.

My Highway Patrolman has to be added to this high class club.
S126399, 4", 5 Screw, an early gun & in great condition.

This forum is sure a great place to hang out and learn.

This is a great thread...just found it the other day.

My Highway Patrolman # S 128xxx

#'s match, but it must have been a service revolver. Bluing worn out in a small spot on the tip of barrel, spot under the trigger-guard, and small spot just to left of hammer. also see lots of small "dings" (for lack of a better word) on the right side by the S&W logo. Probably from the metal snap of a holster.

Seems to be very usable although I haven't had a chance to fire it yet.

Unfortunately it does not have the original grips, but Pachmayr "presentation" grips. Was this a typical replacement grip?

From reading this forum, I gather mine is a Pre-28 model?? If anyone could give me more info about it, I would appreciate it.

Thanks...

Hello SF1973 - and welcome to the Forum
Congratulations on getting a Highway Patrolman model Smith & Wesson - they are great guns. It is a pre-Model 28 and based on the serial number of your gun, it was made during the 1954 - 1955 time period, and you are right about the grips - it would have been shipped with either wood Magna or Target grips with the diamond center.
If you are interested in collecting Smith & Wesson guns, a great book to get is Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson by Supica & Nahas, there is a great deal of good reliable information there.
I know you'll enjoy your Highway Patrolman.
Regards, Gary

Thanks Gary,

This was a deal that fell in my lap, I had no intention of buying one, but I couldn't pass up. I knew nothing about the HP line or the history, but liked the gun. Now that I've handled it a bit, I REALLY like it. The only other Smith I own is a little 642 snubbie I carry on a regular basis.

I take it original grips are difficult to come by. Does anyone make accurate reproductions

Thanks again!

Brian

If they're too nice, they won't match the gun anyhow. Mines nice, but definitely well "broken-in." Thanks for the tip, I'll keep my eye on the classifieds.

Well for me the ugliest thing about your gun is those grips. The gun looks pretty good and some nice diamond magnas or targets would really top it off.

A few years back while suffering a huge lapse of intelligence I sold my 28-2 with a 6 inch barrel. 30 minutes hadn't elapsed until I regretted the sale. A few months ago I found one that I liked on an online auction. Today is the first time that I have been able to shoot it and it made me wonder why I had waited so long to get another. It was soooo smooth. I have a like new 19-4 and K38 and if I could only have one I am not sure it wouldn't be the 28-2.

I agree. Looking at the classifieds, it looks like decently priced grips go quick. I guess I'll just keep my eyes open.
