The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

The frame is marked -2? I can see a -3 using up old -2 cylinders. I'd like to know too.

Here's a neglected 5-screw HP I recently rescued. I still don't have it completely cleaned up but it's mechanically great and one sweet shooter. Serial number S1117xx

This is my Highway Patrolman S/N S 111512. A letter from Roy Jink's stated the gun left the factory July 2, 1954 and delivered to Marshall Wells Co., Duluth, Mn.

David Chicoine at oldwestgunsmith.com for a total rebuild, mechanical and finish.
For just a re-blue Ford's or S&W would do.

After reading this thread I now believe that Roy Jinks was mistaken when he said that no 28s were shipped with Targets and were all dealer installed (at least that's what I recall him saying but maybe I am wrong). One member has a box marked Target stock option; another has a set of Targets numbered to the gun (and that's something else that's not supposed to happen); and the old ad stating that the HP was available with Targets for an additional $5 makes me believe they were factory equipped that way on customer order.

In the late 1970s I had a 4" 28 (do not recall exact model number as I wasn't real aware back then) that had the smooth trigger. Perhaps this was a former NYSP gun? Don't recall any police markings.

Purchased a S&W Highway Patrolman today.

It's a model 28-2, 6" barrel (actually measures 5 7/8"). Does that sound correct? Barrel is pinned, cylinder is recessed.
Serial #N29509x. Mfg. 1975?

The barrel is bulged about 4" forward of the forcing cone.

The model 28-2 cleaned up well. Had some nasty Pacmayr grips. I replaced them with a nice set of target grips.
Paid $225.00 for the S&W.
I'll post pictures later.

Barrel measurements are always nominal. The 2" tubes are usually exactly 1 & 7/8 and the 6" barrels are also often 5 & 7/8 but most of us just call them 2 and 6 for brevity.

The problem with your 28 is that like 99% of all damaged guns it will cost more to fix it than it would have cost to simply buy a nice one. A nice 28 is $450 +/-. You have $225 in this one which needs a replacement barrel at $100 if you are lucky and $125 for a smith to swap it making the total investment... ta-da! $450 or the same as if you had bought a nice one in the first place. Now you have to run around looking for parts, deal with making repairs, and when finished you have a rebuilt gun with reduced value, maybe $350.

I would not have purchased that gun. Buying guns needing repair very seldom makes sense. I had to learn this lesson the hard way.

Hello all , Allen Frame here. I've decided to update this thread with all the correct numbers for the
model breakdowns on page 4.! A daunting task, as I don,t use a computer ,I do it all on paper notes

Regarding Whitecoyotes model 28, it has been my experience that .357 caliber guns with a ring, or bulge in the barrel
will shoot ok just as they are.
Someone else may add their experience or opinions about any danger involved in shooting a revolver
with a bulged barrel.

IF I had a model 28 with a bulged barrel 4 inches or more from the forcing cone, I would send it to David Clements of Clements Custom guns and have him cut the barrel to 3 1/2 inches and re mount the front sight. He can also round butt it also if one so desires.

Regards, and happy shooting , Allen F.

No experience with a bulged 357 but the 38 M&P I had with a 4" barrel bulged 1" from muzzle shot 10" groups at 10 yards.

I'm just trying to be honest with the guy, C&L. Should I lie?
